.17 squirrel or .22 squirrel?

I am interested if anyone has any experience with these cartridges. Would you recommend one over the other? is forming the brass difficult? is it true these cartridges have a very low sound report? I am looking for something with a little more power than a .22 magnum but with about the same report. What kind of velocity do they generate? What is the parent case of this wildcat? I am planning on ordering a Cooper model 38 Classic in one of these calibers soon, it will be my first rifle chambered in a "wildcat" and I am very excited about the forming and reloading part of it all. thank you all.

I do not recomend it as a first a first wildcat, you have allot of forming to do, for it is a shorten 17 Ackley Hornet

speed it about the same as 17Mack4 and 17 Ackley Hornet or bee

it is one of the most expensive 17s you can build, and is not worth it, get your self a 17 Ackley Hornet or 17 Ackley Bee in a single shot or a 17 Mach4 in a bolt gun

JD,
How can the .17 squirrel be the same speed as the others. Unless you are comparing 15 grain bullets to 25 grain bullets.

As far as the case forming, yeah it will be a chore for the first time wild catter. But I know where he could order some formed brass to get himself started.

I have no experience with either of the squirrels that you mention but do have a formed/fired case for both. They both seem like neat little cartridges, but I would definitely lean towards the .17 Squirrel. It should do anything that it's big brother could do. I can only imagine that it will be very quiet, but have nothing to back that on.

Jim, thank you for the info. I'm a little discouraged by JD's post above. I was wondering how the 17 squirrel could even come close to the machIV's performance, it looks to be half the case size. Besides, I have seen the ballistics of the mach IV and I know I don't want anywhere near the noise level of the machIV or .17 rem. I already have plenty of .223's and a .222 rem. I really am looking for something more accurate than the .22WMR cartridge but near the same noise level. Is it the Woodchuck den that already has .17 squirrel brass ready to go? to reload, would I only have to neck size if I went that route? I'm not worried about case forming because as you know yourself, all of us this far into the game are usually pretty determined perfectionist's! by the way Jim, I made my first trip to Maryland this past summer, my wife and I went to Ocean city so we got to drive through most of the state, it's beautiful!

JD forms brass which is why I made that comment. Not sure if he makes it for the .17 Squirrel yet or not, but he does a good job with the other calibers that i have had him form for me. I have seen articles on the squirrel and the accuracy appears to be fantastic. Todd Kindler could sell you back issues of Small Caliber News that would have articles of the .17 Squirrel. He probably sells brass also.

JD's comments on it not being good for the first wildcat are sincere. It is a small case and will use fast burning powders. The case forming is a matter of necking down and trimming a lot off of the case length. It should be a very quiet cartridge good to 100 - 150 yards on varmints or small critters. Call Todd Kindler and discuss your intentions with him.

Thanks Jim and JD, I'm determined to learn even if that means lots of time and money. I will call Todd soon.

by the name that it is given you would think it would be a nice slow speed 17, NO it is not, it still runs a 20 or 25 gr 17 in the low and mid 3000 FPS, whyt pay so much more for dies and spend all the time trimming cases when you can down load a Ackley Hornet or the MK4. when the MK4 runs between 3200 and 3900 and the squirrel will do 3000 to 3600, that is close enought to the MK4 for me to save the money
\

If I remember right, forming dies were 300 and some and FL dies were 200 and some, for in my eyes a worth less round

But as Jim said, it does look cool

copied from anothr board

I shoot the 17 Squirrel. 15 gr Berger with 205M primers and 8.9 gr. of 296 for 3720 fps. quieter than a Hornet and good
to about 200 yrds.

down load a hornet or MK4 and save ALLOT OF MONEY

WOW I had no idea the dies would run that much! you are completely right about just downloading the machIV to 3200fps. After reading your last two posts I am definetely shying away from the squirrel! I don't care how cool anything looks, all I want is something with less bang and recoil than a .223 (not that it has much bang or recoil) but with more accuracy than a .22WMR. Again, thank you much for that info JD. ----chad

do a MK4 in a bolt gun and a 17Ackley Bee or Hornet in a single shoot

You can down load them when needed and run them full speed when needed and still have money left

Also you can load Blue dot loads in your 223, good for 100-150 yards but takes some playing

but for the money stay away from the squirel, is not worth it

What are you going to shoot with it? The 22 sq can duplicate the 22 Mag with 40 gr bullets and will shoot 3 shots into ½ most of the time.
The 17 Sq will shoot 3 ea 15 gr. Berger’s into ¼ inch at 3750 fps if I do my part.
Case forming is a chore but well worth it. You can get it already formed from Todd at (330) 897-0614
I also own a 17 Ack Hornet, 17 HeBee, 17 Mach IV, 22 Mag, 22 Hornet and a 6MM K-Hornet. I have on order a 17 Ack Bee with an additional barrel in 22 Mashburn Bee.
I shoot the 22 Mag, 17 Ack Hornet and 17 sq the most but like them all.
Good shooting
Brooks

Brooks,

I'd like to know more about your .17 Squirrel. 3750 fps is pretty impressive for such a small case -- what length barrel do you have? Also, how does the price of dies compare to some of the more common .17's?

Thanks,
Cannon
