Sounds like the extractor wasn't cut quite right, and sticks up a little higher than it should. I got a bad extractor from Virgin Valley last year (mine didn't stick up far enough to even engage the rim.) Like you, I had waited a long time for the barrel and didn't want to send it back. I emailed Steve and told him as much, and he shipped me a new one within the week. Installing a new one is a simple job. There's a 3/32" roll pin holding the extractor in place. Once it's driven out, the extractor and spring slide right out. The new one Steve sent me was about .001" too wide to fit into the raceway, but a few minutes very carefully stoning the edges did the trick.

Hope this helps --Cannon

JM, It sounds like you have a bent extractor. Very common on Contenders chambered for rimless rounds, and I suppose Encores as well.

When you try to break it open after firing, sometimes for whatever reason, the extractor tries to push the round out but can't, so the short end of the L (the part that snaps under the extractor groove in the cartridge case) gets bent.

If you remove the barrel, look closely and measure with a straight edge, you'll see that the top of the extractor leans toward the muzzle a wee bit. Even a very slight bend changes the geometry of the extractor so that the fired case does not protude as far as it should, and the case is difficult to remove because it has a hard time getting past the bent extractor.

Often even loading can be difficult, and many times a new case is scratched like hell in the process.

The best solution to this problem is to keep a spare extractor on hand($10 or so) but baring that you can straighten them if your carefull.

Fred bulberry had this to say about it:

"Take the thing out, heat it up with a torch until it's blue-hot (before red; if it gets red, let it cool for five seconds or so), bend it until it's a perfect 90 degree angle at the inner corner, and then water-quench it to preserve the temper."

A friend of mine tried it and it worked like a charm.

I hope this helps.............S.Frame
