I picked up my classic about two weeks ago now. gave it the treatment, floated the barrel, glass bed the action, lightened the trigger to 3 lbs, and polished the bore with flitz and then JB bore paste before I ever shot it. set it up with a weaver v16 and leupold rings and bases. it is shooting great! so far the best load has been 24g of IMR 4320, fed 205M primer, and 25 gr stark rpvb/or hornady 25 gr hp's it
I went yesterday and tried some lighter H322 loads with the 20 g vmax's and they opened up to around .80" to 1", so it seems the hotter loads are the ticket.
I think the biggest help to the gun was the bore polishing, I clean about
I am relieved, I have been hearing some problems that people have been having with thier classics on the ggvg forum, but I bet the tune up helped quite a bit, it has helped about all of my rifles from .22 rimfire to 7 mm rem mag.
see ya

Glad to hear your Classic is shootong so good. I can generally hold mine to groups of .75" and would like to glass bed the action to tighten up the groups. I've never done this project before and was wondering what your methods and components for this procedure were. Any articles or documentation you can recommend would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I used the acra glas gel kit. It was $20 ,comes with the two part gel , mixing cup, measuring scoop and release agent. The directions really lay it out crystal clear, it is much easier than you would think. All you are doing is creating a 1/32" to 1/16" layer of glass bedding where the action rests in the stock. some material is removed under the action and behind the recoil lug, and the barrel is free floated. it is really a simple job , just take you'r time with the prep work, and when you are sure that you have coated everything with the release agent , coat it again. I used some chisels and gouges and a dremmel to remove the material, then roughed it with 80 gr paper to give a strong bond between glass and wood. The only additional supplies will be modeling clay to fill what you don't want glass to get into and some finish to seal the inside of the barrel channel after you float the barrel. The gel is about the consistancy of warm peanut butter , so it is easy to work with. Check out the tech section at the ggvg forum, there is a link here on Jims page. someone posted good directions there, read them, but scrap that whole 5 day cure time, the acra glass gel is cured in about 12 hrs. then when you get the kit read through them a few times and you'll be in business. Good luck,

That load sounds familiar. Very close to my favorite load in my .17 Classic. I have good results with mine, not quite as good as yours but I haven't floated, bedded yet. I will do that when I rebarrel. Mine does copper foul though, but I stay on top of the cleaning and it shoots fine. I really like the little classic but think that the barrel is a touch long for a carry gun. I will have my new barrel at 22" probably.
