I finally decided to take the plunge and order another CZ 221 fireball but have it rebarreled to 17 mach iv. I have seen several posters on this board live in the Delmarva area. I'm about 1/2 hour south of Annapolis, MD. Could you recommend a gunsmith to do the work in my general area? I have seen some members on other forums have had similiar rebarrels done for around $350-400

I'm not decided on barrel manufacture yet but the contour should be close to the factory barrel and 22 inches in length.

My previous 17 mach iv is a single shot encore and shoots very well but I feel at a disadvantage with a one shot rifle.

thanks

I can recommend Harrens Custom Rifles 301-831-8068. Eddie did my 17 Killer Bee on a CZ and as soon as the barrel gets here the 19 KB on another CZ. He's in Hyattstown off 270.

Mine is a CZ .223 Varmint built to a .17 MarcIV using a PacNor barrel with conversion done by Gre`Tan. Would not trade it for the world. Greg will soon be building a .20 VarTarg on the CZ .221 for me.

I have a CZ action with a 17M4 barrel. The barrel is 22" inch's long.

What powder[s] are you using ? How is the performance ?

The only powder I have used is Benchmark and 25 gr Hornady bullets. This is with Remington brass and 7 1/2 Remington pimers. I have only fired 20 rounds so not much info on performance. I have some Winchester brass made up and will use CCI br4 primers. So far have had good luck loading for the 221 Fireball and tac 20 with this combo.

Thanks for any information on powders, bullets, primers and loads

I have one built on my 222. I used a Shilen barrel, #4 contour as that was as close to CZ varmint contour I could get, and had Kevin Weaver do the work for me. Turned out to be my favorite rifle for shooting pd's. Use with a bipod as a wlking rifle, no recoil and pops the dogs pretty good. Using a 20vmax with VV133. Did leave the barrel at 25".

Jim,

I have only used 10x 16.5 grains with small rifle CCI BR, 25 grain berger, it was shooting about 1inch at 175 yards from my tailgate. The primers go a little flat with 16.5 grains I tried 17 grains and the primer went very flat. This is a custom encore barrel.

I plan to try the same load with Remington small rifle primers. Lil gun works well in the 221, I hoped it would work with the Mach IV since it meter so well in the tiny neck of the 17cal, but nobody on the web has tried it so I guess their is a good reason for that???

When you reduce the bore diameter from 22 to 17 caliber, you drastically change the powder requirements. Lil' gun is WAY too fast for the Mach IV, forget about that one. If you want to use a ball powder I would suggest Ramshot X-Terminator, or as a distant second choice, H-335.

The Accurate Smokeless Powders Number Two (Revised) manual has data for the .17 Mach IV using AA2230 and AA2460 and the 25gr. Hornady HP. The book lists MAX loads with both powders at 3861 fps and 3883 fps respectively.

I don’t have a .17 Mach IV, just curious about the powder.

I am currently using the AA2230 in my Mach-IV with fairly good results..
Formed LC-04 cases
RP 7 1/2 Primer
25 Gr Hornady HP Moly Coated
19.4 gr AA2230
Chrony says 5 shot average at 3838!!
Went up to 19.8 but got some high pressure signs. One 3 shot group @ .523 The 19.4 groups best has been .320 3 shot.
The 19.4 is now my Coyote getter!!
LilGun for me hasn't done to well. 10.4 at 1.243 up to 12.0 gr at 2.479 (x3 all)
Did get some Blc2 to do a .198 (x3) at 20.2 gr. but since has been around high 6's-low 7's.
All groups listed are 3 shots at 100 yds..
Work your loads up accordingly, and start lower than those listed.. They will pop RP 61/2 Primers

Dan,

that is interesting, the only reason I considered Lil gun was because I noticed that many of the powders used in 223 rem were also used in the 17 remington with a few grain less powder, so I Assumed that lil gun might work.??? Guess I guessed wrong--thanks for the info.
