5mm mag qustions on barrels

Ok i am going to do the conversion on my 591 and was thinking of getting a new tube put on the action.
Well im stuck with this, is there any barrel maker who can sell me a blank thats the full size of the action? I was thinking it was like .800 i dont have a set of calipers.
but is there any maker that can turn this diaminter for me
OTT can chamber the 5mm mag and im not sure if i get a blank if its safe to turn that far.
Or could i get a 204 ruger take-off varmint barrel have it cut off and use whatevers left to make this barrel
anyone have any awsers, also anyone have schroders# or a price list of the conversion

FWIW, I think it would be hard to beat the factory barrel accuracy by very much.... Mine is really accurate and with only one screw holding the pin barreled action it is hard to believe how well that sucker shoots!

Ditto on what Wenzl said. I did my bolt conversion with Eagle View and have their dies.

If your barrel is in good shape, it will probably shoot just great as is.

The only thing I did to my 591 when I got the Schroeder bolt conversion was to cut the barrel off and re-crowned the barrel just behind the front sight to eliminate the coat hook Remington originally put on the rifles.

Any of the custom barrel makers can turn any contour you want. The action OD is 1.00", the standard barrel is .625" OD (5/8") straight cylinder w/ 2 pins holding into the receiver.
I converted my 591 to 5mmShrike (5x28) and used the original barrel but threade d the action and made an intermediate tenon that threaded the barrel to action. The old original barrel is a serious shooter, I would think twice about dropping the extra cash on a custom barrel if the original is in decent condition (no pitting or rust inside) and the 'smith will agree to re-use it.
Sure is a handy little rifle, light weight and good fit to my shooting.

E-mail me at Eagle_view@hughes.net, I have a M591 with a Shilen barrel that is 0.800" Dia x 20" that I set up last summer but have been too busy to really test it. The Remington factory barrels are hard to beat.

Hello to all,

Came across this form while looking for information on the Remington 591 5MM Magnum that was passed to me. First started looking for ammo for this rifle and everything is at collector prices, then found that their is a center fire conversion for the 591, but I've never reloaded. I keep going deeper and deeper and now I'm looking for advice and general knowledge for the 591.
