I use Viht N 140 with a 20gr V Max with excellent results. 24gr gives great accuracy and velocity.

I have used the following loads for 600 yard paper punching

30gr FB Berger- 23.4grs Varget- 3750fps
30gr FB Berger- 22-22.5grs N135-3750-3800fsp

Laser beam load- 20gr Vmax- 26grs AA2520 - 4500fps
this load really shot well in my gun.

My current load is 24gr of W748 with the 25gr Hornady HP (can't get the 25gr Vmax over here yet)
With the 20gr Vmax I use 22.5gr of Benchmark. I only use Remington 7 1/2 primers, though Winchester work just as well.

Though there are a lot of you that will tell me to "Run away...save yourself"...
I'm asking if any of you out there have any pet loads for the 37 gn VLD in the 17 Rem?

I have tried Varget and though ok on accuracy, I was hoping for a little more velocity without punching primers. Mine is topping out at 3400 with bullets seated deep. I can accept that velocity with that bullet, but the primers (Rem 7 1/2) are looking a little stressed as well.

Thanks.

Teven - although this is from reading other's problems with the 37gr VLD's, the velocity ceiling for that bullet is right around where you are pushing it. Some guys can't get over 3,300fps without blowups, while others ceiling out at 3,500fps. Your Varget load is probably about tops for velocity with that bullet.

Daryl,

Thanks for your input. I did fudge a little by going with a 7 twist barrel vs. the 6 twist that is recommended. I was hoping to push it a little faster than what the 6 twist barrels require. For some reason that is not happening. I am still not sure exactly why.

The reason I think that I am able to get away with a 7 twist is because of my shootig conditions. Living in Colorado, nearly all of my shooting will be at altitudes between 5500 and 13000 feet.

I have been doing some load work ups in my 17 Remington and one load that works well is....

R-P Case
7 1/2 BR primer
23.7 gr IMR-4320
30 Kindler Gold

I get about 3950 fps and good groups.

Another good one for me is BR-4 primers, 24.5 gr Varget and 25 gr Vmax. Thanks Doug for the suggestion of your pet load as it works fine in mine also.

I have a 17 Rem being built for me, it will be on an AR platform. I ordered brass and bullets and put a load together using 25 gr. Hornadys and 25 gr. Bergers with H414.
Anyone have experience with 414??
It slides right down into that tight little neck so well I hate to try anything else. Ofcourse I haven't shot it so I have no idea if it will perform but it would be nice if it did.

20gn Vmaxs, 24.5gn BM2 (Benchmark), 4400fps
25gn Vmaxs, 23gn BM2 (Benchmark), 4100fps

These loads group under .5 moa in a L461 with original light barrel as long as it is clean. It will not group if left uncleaned and stored for awhile even after as few as say 5 rounds. I have learned this the hard way. I suspect that the throat is worn and maybe rough and therefore accumulates copper at an accelerated rate if used dirty after a few days.

The first shot out of a clean barrel is about an inch outside of the subsequent groups. Hence my original relucatance to clean it after a POI check.

As the barrel heats up it starts to string verticaly but will stay under moa until stored for a couple of days.

I have been planning to rebarrel to something heavier for a long time but keep getting seduced by tight groups ot of this very light setup.

I would like to move onto a 20 PPC if the bolt face can be opened up and if the magzine will feed a PPC. If it won't I will probably go a 20TAC.
