Strolling through some old photos and came across quite a few of Rem. Made me think back to that very first Saubier PD shoot In GI sitting in a Motel talking to Rem about the 20 BR. I just knew it was a barrel burner and just never did give it a chance in my own mind,,,, that is until Rem started talking about it… Best riffle I ever built and all because of Rem… Not sure to be happy or mad at him LOL

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f388/glwenzl/IMG_2185.jpg

Noticed in many of the photos he was spotting or helping someone else out… A man with a lot of common sense, laid back approach to things… well to put up with even someone like me… what a great guy and friend I have been privileged to meet as many of you

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f388/glwenzl/IMG_2130.jpg

So since its thanksgiving time and am thankful to have met a bunch of great guys like you through this forum and especially Rem!!!!

Some good memories there Gary. Our praire dog trip every year with Rem is always the high light of each year for me. Adam, it had to be something Gary was doing. Gary where was Gus in that last pic?

I normally see REM at least a few times a week. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't know about this place and I wouldn't have anything under a .223. Probably have a little more money too.

pretty sure he was... we sure had a great time out there!!! I'll have to see if i took any pics that trip...

I do remember taking my oldest son on one of the trips and going just a lil too fast through a small town anxiously heading your way... the long arm of the law slowed me down, gave me a warning and told me where to go shoot PDS at too...

L-R Ray Doug Rem/Richard and John. yes big sky country, I thought I died and went to heaven. following Doug around up in that country and running with that crew will get ya into trouble… you’ll come home with stuff you never knew they made…. They just love to corrupt an innocent lil country boy…

Richard is probably one of the best shooters I know… he can really dial in on em fast but where his tallent really comes in is how easily he can get you dialed in on a PD. Some of ya may know how landmarks can be few and far between maiking it difficult to communicate to someone as to where you are seeing a PD!

Especially for those of us who are "johnny come lately's" on the forum it's great to be able to put names with faces.

Never met the good looking one on the right but the other 3 outlaws (LOL)I have hunted with. If the one on the right is anything like the other 3 he'd be a swell fellow to hunt with. I was on 2 hunts with Rem and he treated me with respect and like you said he was always helping someone more that he was shooting himself. Would'nt mind another hunt with him.

That’s a nice one Charlie and I have had some fond memories and intimate moments with that riffle as well.

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f388/glwenzl/P5250008.jpg

Shot my first Jack with it in Montana. Looks like I was wearing the shoot first ask questions later one saubier.com tees shirt that day.

In case you are into the history of that riffle, there was a guy here on saubier.com that went by Hunter. Not sure if he is still around but was from Oklahoma and was selling it to get something bigger for the longer range windy days in a PD town. Hunter was a great guy also, I bought two riffles from him and he took good care of his stuff. That 17 AH is one that I should have not let get away but in reality when I posted it FS here on saubier little did I know it would be the beginning of a great friendship with one of the nicest guys I have ever met! I’m very happy for you and am sure you will have many great memories with the riffle as well!

Bill, that guy on the far right is just like the other three hoodlums, he has two really awesome riffles to be really proud of and he knows how to shoot them at some longer ranges!

My first PD hunt with REM was in 1993. I think it was his first hunt too. We went to South Dakota and had a blast. I remember I only had two PD rifles then. A .223 and a 22-250 both Ruger Varmints and a 77/22 22lr.
We went 3 years in a row and I used the same 3 guns every year.

This place has changed my way of thinking, as far as rifles go.

My son and I went PD hunting in 08, 09, 10 in Nebraska. My Ruger 19 Calhoon is the only gun that made more than one trip. lol

I'll have to tell REM he is famous............

This is a GREAT post! Like an earlier poster mentioned, I appreciate the photos with names so I can get to associate names and faces. It's funny how one tries to picture what someone looks like by their name, board name, or even hearing their voice on the phone only to find they look totally different than what you had imagined.

Thanks again for naming names :D

its knind of hard to tell my back side from the front...

Not sure but i believe I just completed ff all my 22 KBs and started on my 17 KBs with the 25 gr V-Max after sighting it in on a mound... may not be the same place but seems like we was having troubles connecting on long range shots and rem noticed the wind was blowing the opposite direction down rang as it was where we were so we all was leading the wrong way into the wind until rem saw the dust kick up down range... he’s on the ball!

what do you mean i missed the second one... I must have taken that pic

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f388/glwenzl/DSCF0002.jpg

there is my hat when i someone asked about the third....

Not sure how I ended up with a hat but I imagine Rem had something to do with it... Him Ray and john stopped in on their way back home...

Doug if you would of offered to help change a diaper now and then I may have gotten to go lol... stink'n darn jobs anyhow LOL

montdoug

Gary I believe Ray had them hats made so that visit from Ray and Richard is undoubtedly when it showed up.
Big wind came up that 1st day of the second annual and I think it was Kenny's hat got near blew into South Dakota. As memory serves we finally found it but somehow it had developed little .17 caliber holes in it , defective hat I guess ;).

I had the privilege of getting to spot for him and have him spot for me at last year's (2010) Saubier's SE Nebraska shoot. A great guy a REAL good shot. Showed us how to shoot through lifesavers at 100 yards with that 17 Squirrel. Darned impressive!

I don't remember whether I met REM at the first Easter egg shoot he put together in Rockport (which morphed into the annual event in Omaha--see pic below) or the 1st Saubier.com hunt in NE. Both places he took me under his wing and helped me a lot. I've had the privilege of getting to hunt and shoot quite a bit with REM, and he has taught me everything I know about shooting prairie dogs (which is very little, but that's not his fault). He is THE best at first shot kills. He has a crazy ability to estimate the range, dial the scope, hold for wind, and squeeze the trigger...BOOM-dead p-dog.

I saved my favorite pics for their own post. Remember the uncanny ability at first shot kills? We were shooting PDogs in WY 2 years ago. We were shooting at a few mounds 300 yards or so contending with the wind, and saw something huge back behind them a ways. I kept the binoculars up and he turned a few clicks on the scope (I think he was shooting his 40X 17 MachIV). Bang flop-- dead badger at almost 400 yards.

The Omaha egg shoot picture was in '07. The first Saubier hunt was in '04 and the WY hunt referenced above was 2010.

Something I came across while finding the above photos-- the 17 MachII in it's infancy. They were still being hand loaded in the Hornady R&D department. Note the CCI shell box with the Sharpie name. It's next to a 22 mag for comparison. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen, especially out of the little Ruger 96 that was the test gun. This photo would have been from '04 as well.

This thread was intended to post some pictures of some good memories for Rem. He has cancer and not much I can do to help but was hoping some good memories might be good right now with those darn treatment he needs to take.

Rem is a very modest type of guy and not the type to be looking four sympathy but a few minutes ago I received his permission to let you fine fellers know. I did not tell him what i was up to.

Thank all of you who had said nice things and had no idea. Thanks for all the awesome pix, I may have enjoyed them more than anyone. Jay you captured some special moments of Rem.

As far as this post you are all too much kind.

Howdy Rem, I have some tee shirts a friend made for me that have "Cancer Sucks" on the left chest. Kinda sums it up nicely!
If you want one send me your address, I been down this road and it do suck, big time. But that was 12 years ago.
I'm expecting you to get this crap behind you and then grab Mr. Wenzl by his ear, throw him in Ray's truck and lets do a repeat of a few years back. I'll get better weather ordered this time, promise .

Heck, I'll even drive over the hill and let ya teach me how to shoot that little Cooper you were kind enough to part with.
Or better yet, we'll all go over to OR and poach a truck load of Ricks Diggers like we talked about. :D

Well Rem, I've never met you but after reading this thread I can see where I'm the one who has missed out. This is a great website with a bunch of really fine folks on here. To add to the encouraging words from Doug and Charlie, I had cancer twice and have been cancer free for 17yrs. now and they told me mine was terminal giving me one year to live. Like they really knew and obviously didn't know me. Just think of it as a Predator/Varmint that CAN be eradicated. ;)
You will be in my positive thoughts as I am sure your intentions are to be rid of it.

Jackie told me to tell you guys that she knows his e-mail account is full. I told her I would let you guys know and that I was sure you guys will understand why there has been no responses.

Please keep Rem, his wife and his son and daughter in your prayers, Rem has a grandbaby being born very soon her due date is Christmas day but she has gone early.

Doug S… the tee shirt you sent couldn’t of said it better! Thanks and I forgot to tell you on the way home that Rem really enjoyed it and his wife had no idea it was coming. She said that she got on Rems e-mail picked out some mont… and hope it was the right guy and sent you a thank you, it meant a lot to them.

If your oncologist asks you about a "port" say YES.....

I have one in for the chemo treatments and it is MUCH easier than being poked every time you have your chemo.

This may be the last picture in this thread and has to be one of the best. Rem doing what he loves to do.

Probably should have been some old automobile pix posted as this was another one of his hobbies but I never did partake in any of that and unfortunately do not have any pix. Rem had many good friends through that part of his life also. One old car buff told me yesterday that he helped Rem get started in fixing up old cars when Rem was just 14 years old

edit: I realize that there has been some of you who have gone through similar situations as Rem, who may or may not be here in person and may not have got this kind of attention. My heart and prayers are with all who have and will have to face challenges like this. It seems like this site has brought together many guys from all over the world who not only share a common interest in small calibers but who are some of the most friendly helpful people I have ever met. I’m sure this thread could use any one of your names and it would have the same meaning and effect. May God Bless each and every one of you!
