For 16 years my Rat Terrier, Karla was my faithful companion in the gopher patch.

I have never had a dog like her. She was runt of the litter and destined to be put down by the breeder.

She caught and killed her first animal, a red squirrel when she was less than a year old.

Over the years she took woodchucks, rock chucks, prairie dogs, possum, mice, rats and thousands of gophers. She also treed a raccoon, cornered a badger and blood trailed a wounded deer in deep grass. She loved to flush grouse for me.

When at home she was never more than a few feet from me at anytime. She even challenged the wife for the Alpha female role in our pack a few times.

This past winter her kidneys started failing and I finally had have her put to sleep, to end her suffering.

Today I scattered her ashes on a gopher mound and sat back and waited for a gopher. Here is a video of Karla's last gopher hunt.

You know between my parents and I, we have 7 Jacks and Rats. I'd hate to lose even one of them. Go out buy two more and enjoy. Adam

Sorry for your loss..
I want another rat terrier. I had one as a kid named Buster and he looked almost just like Karla minus the tail his was docked off. Very cool dogs.

Sorry to hear of your loss Double D. Many times, it feels worse losing a trusted pet than anything else on earth.

I'll get back to you on this, the 20th, I place my wife's ashes in her grandfathers grave---she was my favorite gopher hunting partner.

Sorry for your loss!! I know the pain!! I have chosen not to own any more pets. To painful when you have to bury them!! A man is entitled to one good dog but when you lose the 5th one it weighs on you!!!Charlie

Douglas, I got nothing to say that will help. Saying goodbye to family members, two legs or four, has to be the roughest part of living. Keep the Faith, man.
