I recently bought a beauty of a .17 FB from a friend and have totally enjoyed gathering up ammo, components and advice from forum members and retailers.
My hand loads have bettered the very good groups of the factory ammo slightly and with everything dialed in at 200y, several groups were "tiny" enough to satisfy me. So on Friday at daylight, I headed out on a mission to try it out on the local varmint population. I guess all the target shooting really paid off with this .5 moa gun. I shot this dog at 15 feet, sighting down the barrel as he looked for the source of noise when my slung rifle came off my shoulder while he passed behind a creek bank. He never knew what hit him as the 20g Rem round passed through his neck. He simply fell over backward in a tight ball and gradually relaxed without a kick....http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/Khornet/013_zpsb09dac75.jpg

Great pic and story. 15 feet is way harder than 300 yards.

Sorry about the run-on sentence form, but I tried to condense the story for reading pleasure. I believe that was the closest shot I have ever made on a coyote in 40 years of hunting them. Wish I had called him in, but he had no idea anything was around of suspicious nature. It was like being invisible....

Beautiful Remington! BTW, all 3 of my 17 FB LTD Editions had slightly larger chambers than the other models...

Oh No, you're ruined now! You're not going to want to carry anything else.
Over the years, i've hunted animals with 20+ different calibers and the 17 FB is my favorite. Ability to take anything from a crow to a Coyote, and see every hit. I know the guys on here get sick of reading my posts on the Fireball!

Yes, I am sure to reach for my 17 FB most days in the country. I do seem to run into hogs quite often, so might wish for the 6mm or 22-250 at times. I do know that a .221 FB will kill a hog with a temple shot.

I will let you know about the 17 Fireball on hogs in a couple of months. We have tons of them here, and when the crops get up it will be game on!
I want to see what a 30g Gold in the ear does to a hog.

A 30g in the ear should do it! The 40 VM /.221 FB dropped a pretty good hog last spring with a noggin side shot at a long way away. I have done the same with my 17 HMR/20gr at close range with good results. When those rascals show up, one has to improvise and use what is at hand. I am hoping for a distance shot with the 17 FB on a coyote soon.
