Two projects done.

That 17mach4 is sexy. I think that is the nicest piece of myrtle I ever saw.

What a beautiful pair, you must be very proud of them. what are the details, who built them on what actions/barrels etc and who made those stocks !.

I am looking to do a 20BR myself shortly, probably using a Lawton 7500 and a Bartelin 1 in 9 twist for Berger 50 grainers. Was going to fit a McM but after looking at your timber am now unsure.

Thanks

The actions are Wasatch made here locally they are both single shots.

The stocks are a Wasatch design.

I did the metal finish work and stock work.

Project was well over 1 year in the making.

Going to have to try to wear them out now.

The chambering on the Myrtle is an improved 20 BR chamber.
Pac-nor 1 in 11 twist #6 contour with a Performance Guns muzzle brake.

The dark English walnut is a Mach IV on a Shilen #5 with a 1 in 10 twist.
It has a short Performance Guns muzzle brake also.

Wood is a wonderful thing and I was just trying to enhance what mother nature put here. I have seen both stocks in a soft matte finish after they were finished sanded and the gloss seemed to show the depth of the wood better. So I left them glossy. I would like to have them lasered at a latter date if I can find some one to do it for me.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the info, you have made a really lovelly job of them. On the 20BR how have you improved it, altered the shouder angle along the lines of P O Ackley?. 1 in 11 twist suggests 32 grain pills, maybe 39 grainers, what sort of accuracy and velocity are you getting?. Experiance here suggests that the Sierra 39 gr BK can be launched at 4000 pfs easily with no pressure signs from a standard 20BR case.

I would be very interested in talking to your stock builder, I only have small hands and find palm swells etc hard to get on with. the Cooper stock does fit quite nicely however as does the McClassic. If they do not have a web site perhaps could either post or pm me their details. How did you finish the stocks?, have you also laquered them?.

Thanks again for your help.

The stock is a proprietary design and belongs to Wasatch Precision Machine.

The stocks were roughed out from blanks, with a tracer machine here locally.
Trying to get Wenig to aquire the pattern set up so they can cut stocks. The blank needs a little work yet and then it's finished it will be sent to them so they can make a patern.

I inleted them and put about 6 coats of PPG automotive clear coat on them.

Nice thing about finishing them yourself is that you can make them fit. Just take the wood off that doesn't fit.

The case is improved with a 40 degree shoulder and the case neck is shortened about .050". I think it is a little shorter than the Dasher but not sure. It needed a shorter neck cause the 20 BR is ungodly long and looks funny.

I assume that you also built a resize or shoulder die for it. I appreciate that you will mostly neck size but occasionally you will have to bump the shoulder back a thou maybe.

I was ideally looking for a drop in stock, maybe unfinished but one not needing much work to it.

So how does it perform or have you not tried it yet.?

Thanks again,

A

I am going to have a set of dies made. Since I am the only one with this chamber it might be expensive, do not know yet.

Right now I am going to do some fire forming then we will see. I have faith it will do 4000+ with a 40 gr. bullet.

With the muzzle brake it should be a sweet shooter.

It is hard to find a drop in these days unless you go to Accurate Innovations. The make some fine stuff. Maybe one day they will have a copy of the blank and be able to provide stocks for a Wasatch actioned rifle.

I sent you a PM if you want to chat some.

I have spoken to Accuracy Innovations and found them very helpfull indeed with an almost immediate response. By far the most helpfull people I have spoken to stockwise. My action will almost certainly be a Lawton 7500, gives me a rebarrel option of anything in 308 class if the time comes and I fancy a switch. Barrel I am looking at is a Bartelin 1 in 9, that stabalises the 50gr Berger.

We have two or three guys shooting the 20BR accross this side of the pond, that are getting 4000 fps with the 39 grain SBK with no pressure signs and shooting in the .2s. They are using McMillans and are set up as heavy long range varmint rifles.

Chucker,

Can you post some close up photos of the actions. What contour barrels are on these rigs?

Myrtle wood rules!

Chucker,

I have never seen one of these actions. Are you pleased with them and how would you compare the quality to a BAT?

This pic has a 20 BR case for comparison.

Things I like about the action:
The bolt handle radius lines up with the action body (see first pic).
The action uses Remington style triggers.
The bolt shroud to bolt body is a close fit (see second pic).
The bolt body to action is a tight tolerance fit.
Closing the bolt is like locking a vault.
This one has been polished up but it did not take much work to get it to this condition.
Recoil lug is integral with the action body (see third pic).
It is about 1" shorter than Remington’s (short) action.
Bolt handle is nice and long but not too long.
Sako extractor is used.
Everything is on center and lines up perfectly. Firing pin in dead center on the primer.
Scope mounts are two each front Remington bases.

I can not see anywhere or anything which could be improved. Fit and finish are next to perfect. The thing is a machinist work of art. It has some subtle improvements incorporated on the action which cannot be seen until you take a closer look.

Very nice.

Those are absolutley beautiful rifles !
The workmanship on the wood is unbelievable.

Are you taking orders - build me a stock - drop in for same action as yours.
Do they make a repeater?

There are some cool things happening with these actions.

There is rumor there may be one in the future.

Can't take credit for the wood, God put it here, I just had the opportunity to highlight it a little.

Hope things are well up north.

Chucker, give me a shout if you would like to go up to Idaho or over to Wyoming for some chuck or pdog shooting. It would be nice to meet you in person and do some shooting together. I still owe you for the loan of your 20BR dies last year.

Work is kind of silly right now, let me look at my schedule and we will find some time. I think it is kind of cold right now. Ya I'm a wimp. Sounds like fun, I am getting marmotosis fever, when I drive by the chucks sitting on the road I break out in cold sweat and my finger starts to itch....

All it takes it a finger breaking the trigger and watching the Marmot flip into the air!
