Max load with N135 is 22.8 with a 25gr bullet. I use 24gr of N140 with a 20gr bullet. I don't believe you will have any luck with 130 or 133, I think its to fast and your cases will only be 3/4 full.

Joe Z,

I have never used N130 or N133 but have used N135.

In my rifle 22.5grs of N135 and a 30gr FB Berger gave 3750fps and NO pressure signs. Easy opening and great accuracy. I could have gone up quite a bit from all pressure indications.

Varget also works well. Use about 22.5grs and work up from there.

Joe, I never had any luck with N133 in my four different .17 Rems. I tried it with the various 25's, 30's and the 20 gr. VMax. IMR4320 is always a good baseline to start from, as is WW760 and AA2700. -Al

I too would opt for slower powders that fill the case up. I would try Varget, VV-140, 540, 150, 550 and maybe some Ramshot Big Game.

For the Varget and VV 140 with 30gr bullets start at 22grs with the slower powders listed you could start one grain higher and see where your max is.

I did try VV N133 but didn't have much luck. Actually accuracy was rubbish.
For the lighter bullets (20gr) Benchmark works well for me, but with the 30gr Bergers I am now using W748 or H380. The Hodgdon website lists 22 grains of H380 as a starting load. I use 22 grains of W748 which also works well. As always your mileage may differ!

I have used N-550 and N-540 as well as Big Game with the 30 gr Bullets. I did get some great velocity with BG but the accuracy was not there nor was it with any 30 gr bullet powder combo. Thinking is was more of a barrel/twist issue more than anything else though....

I bought some BG as a substitute for the VV-550 that I am using in my .17. I am paying 90.00 per two pound container of VV pus shipping and tax when I can actually find it in Canada.

Dan C. said the BG was working well in his .17 Predator so I gave it a try. The velocity is there but I did not really tweek the load for supreme accuracy. It was showing potential and at a quarter of the price it would be fine.

Eventhough my lot of Varget is acting more like VV-550 in burn rate it does not work as well as the VV-550 in my .17. I also had good velocity with IMR4320 but could never get the accuracy I thought I should get. I think I was up to 26grs of IMR4320 with a 25gr Hornady coated bullet in my .17 Rem Classic.

Please be careful with all listed loads and start well below. I ran into trouble with my .17 Wildcat where I got some Lapua, WIN, and Federal .223 brass mixed up. The Fed and Lapua cases had at least a grain and half difference in capacity and I blanked some primers but it could have been worse.

If your looking for Viht Powder try Lock, Stock, and Barrel Web Site or Powder Valley Web Site. Prices Are rising, But the last Viht prices I had were $40.00-$45.00 per lb US. I also order 16-20 lbs at a time to get a price break and cut down on shipping.

Joe, There is no reason N133 or N130 shouldn't be OK in the 17 Remington. They are both slower than IMR3031, IMR 4198 and between H322 and H335. I just can't answer your question as to starting loads. I would guess, start at about 19 or 20gr. That should be pretty light. Kenny

Sorry I couldn't help. I reread my post and realized my numbers were off, the actual price was $40.00-$45.00 for 2lb containers. Good hunting.
