Anyone happen to have a good load for the .17 MachIV using AA2230, a 20gr Vmax, and Remington 7.5's?

Thanks in advance.

I use it with the 25 gr Hornady but haven't tried it with the 20's yet.
Not much help is it??:o

19.5 of 2230 behind the 25's was a real tac driver in my 1st M4, but also showed to be quite hot above 80 degrees in my old Cooper 21 action so I quite loading that. Always wondered about this powder as the AA manual shows higher powder charges as being safe loads. I should have chronographed them but didn't. For the 20 grain bullet 18.8 grains would be safe starter load then worked up carefully across your chronograph is the best thing.

Good Luck and let us know if you do this; I would be very interested in your results.

That's a really good powder. I don't shoot 20's in a MIV, only 25's......with 19.8gr of 2230/BR4primer and either 25Hammett or 25Calhoon accuracy is low-mid .3''s at 3986fps. Also 2230 is magic in a 6BR with light bullets. One thing......when it's time to buy more powder, be aware that 2230 can vary quite a bit from lot to lot and you'll want to re-do your loads.

Also, I haven't done a MIV primer test using 2230, but with VV135 and 25gr bullets, the BR4 primer was 30-40fps faster than a Rem.7-1/2.

Ackerman;
What rifle/barrel is your M4?

Ackerman;
What rifle/barrel is your M4?

It's a first generation Pacnor 10 twist, 23" long, .294" neck. The action is an AI Sako.

Seeing more clearly now why my little Cooper action seemed hot at 19.5 grains; over 3900 fps and perhaps closer to 4000 fps with 25 grain bullets; very tight groups though.

Thanks for the info=

Another AA-2230 load someone may find useful. If your 17 barrel won't shoot the Vmax into bug holes and most of your shooting is within reasonable distances then this may be of some help.

While working up loads for my friend Jim and in his new/used Cooper M4, (all while he suns himself in Arizona for the winter) I tried AA-2230 powder under Tanner 22.5 grain bullets. First off, I know this bullet and powder are not board favorite's but then I tend to look for, and accept, the "other stuff" when certain barrel's refuse to shoot what's popular. I do like the Vmax as a first choice but also found they won't shoot bug holes in every barrel.
Jim tried hard getting his barrel to shoot both 20 and 25 vmax's using Benchmark but no cigar so; he went to Sunny Arizona leaving me the rifle in hopes of finding something this rifle like's before considering re-barreling.
Before testing new loads the decision was made to re-check all brass for length in the Wilson trimmer plus re-chamfer using Sinclair VLD chamfer tool that I now prefer to all others. Also re-checked all primer pockets discarding a few that measured lose. After several powder charges and seating depth changes I hit pay dirt with the following:

Cases: 221 Rem with minimal neck turning 100%
Bullet: 22.5 Tanner coated W/SPL (seated .005 off)
Powder: AA-2230
Load: 18.8 grains
Vel: 3925 fps
Group: .312 @100yds

As this bullet's BC is 175 I may try pushing them to 3950 but I'll wait for summer weather on that. Oh; this bullet also shoots quite well in my 17AH and 17HB.
