A 221 fb go gauge will work also. Bill K :)

221 and 17FB use different gauges. PTG and JGS do not list the 17FB in their interchageability lists for gauges under the 221. If you go to the SAAMI website and look the prints they have different datum diameters and lengths.

Mine works just fine for me in all the 221fb chambers. But everyone is free to do what they feel is right. Bill K

Still want a 17 fireball go gauge. Have a 20vt go gauge, and it is VERY close, but want the 17fb gauge for reference. I am PICKY.

Sorry Bill, but will pass on your advice. Maybe works for you--BUT:

Dropped a 221 go gauge into a Wilson 17fb case gage, and it is .035 proud of max.

My 20vt go gauge is just under max in the Wilson 17fb gage. I dug around and could not find a 20vt Wilson case gage, but found two 17fb case gages. Thought I had a 20vt case gage, so will have to do some serious digging to see if I can find it before I order another.:o

I used my instant comparator and compared the 221 go gauge and 17fb go gauge-both using the .330 shoulder contactor. 221fb was .0116 longer at the .330 datum. Gonna have to call Redding and see if they can make me a correct .300 shoulder contactor for the vartarg and 17fb. It works fine as is with the 330 datum comparison for the 20vt, but would like to have a 'correct' one to measure with.

Pretty sure if I used a 221fb go gauge to spin a savage 17fb barrel on that I would have serious headspace concerns...... Probably even have primers backing out of the case on firing or worse.

Headspace is what you make of it.
I just spun a 17FB barrel on an action, once fired case full length sized some shim stock, gutted the bolt of everything, done in about 20 minutes.

I know a lot of people frown on that type method.

Your sure don't have to apologize too me. We all do the setting up of our rifles in the manner we feel safe with. Someone will have a used one or PTG and others will sure sell you a new one. Enjoy your project and build. Bill K :)

I am new here, I have one, I don't want to sell it, but I would loan it to you.

Roger,

I do much appreciate your kind and generous offer to loan your gauge to me, but I want one for myself for permanent use and reference.

Looks like it is time to find a new one in stock and place an order.

Thank you!
