Does anyone have a 16” 357 Maximum Contender barrel they would like to part company with? Prefer SS 16” barrel but would consider either stainless or blued barrel 14” to 20”.

Let me know what you have and what you need for it.

Thanks,

I have a stainless MGM 357 mag barrel that flat shoots. It isn't a maximum though. My son used it the last 2 years to hunt with. We were shooting
140 grain FTx and n110. If it will work then let me know.

Sold mine, a 16” MGM
Excellent deer cartridge.
Good luck finding one.

I am looking for a barrel to use for handgun deer hunting in Illinois so anything over 16” - 18” would require some shortening work, along with rechambering. I am currently using a 14” Bullberry 30/221 (AKA 300 Whisper) but would like to go to 357 Max for additional range and power.

What length is your MGM and what do you need for it? Feel free to PM if you wish.

Thanks

I donf know why I posted it as a MGM. It is a bullberry with their match chamber in 357. It is 20" long. I don't think it would be what you want to cut down. It has a gentry custom barrel band and a few things to make it a really nice rifle barrel.

Agree. Sounds too nice to modify.

Gary, are you still straight wall only?

There is no limit on case length for straight-walled cases (45-70 in a handgun anyone?) but bottle necked cases are limited to 1.4” in length. Cartridges must be at least 30 caliber and have commercial ammo listed with a minimum of 500 foot pounds of energy along with several other requirements.

I do have a Super 16 BBL in .45/70. Near new condition, with sights. PM if there's an interest in this caliber.

Against my better judgement, I will send a PM with a few questions.🙄😱

I'm not a fast learner , it took me 3 shots from my 16'' 45/70 to put it down.

Ray I am even slower. I can’t remember if mine was a 14” or 16” but an afternoon at the range left me with the bridge of my nose scraped and bleeding from the scope, both hands bleeding and a knot on my forehead from contact by the barrel. I don’t remember how shots I fired that afternoon but the barrel was sold shortly. When I got back from the range that afternoon my wife slowly looked me over and asked “Did you have a good time at the range?”

And here I am asking about buying another. Talk about slow learner!

Last call for a relatively powerful barrel for Illinois handgun deer hunting (357 Max, 45 Colt or :eek:45/70) 14” to 20” in length. I will likely give Ed’s TCs a call a little later this week.

Anybody? I tried to follow up with dtalbot but haven’t received a reply.

Gary: As long as your looking for something in the 357 Max line, why not do more checking on the new 350 Legend round coming out ? 223 base cartridge, straight walled and in 357 cal ? should make a better round that even the 357 Max, from what I have read so far. New shot show item and Winchester also is making a bolt rifle for it. Of course we could get MGM, Bellm's and other's I am sure to come up with barrels for our single shots and TC/s. :D Bill K :)

Probably bears further investigation. Is the performance better than the Max? I haven’t seen anything definitive yet and would appreciate any pointers to information on its performance.

I also have brass, dies and reloading components already for the 357 Max (I had a Ruger 357 Max revolver) but I am flexible in that regard. I also tend to favor rimmed cartridges in the Contender. Looks like Starline is making brass that would work for the 350 Legend.

Thanks for the input.

How about a 375 Winchester or a 44 magnum barrel?
I think I have these tucked away somewhere.
I'll go take a look.

Not a lot of info out that I can find yet, but some says it hits like a 243 W, but less recoil and all. the Rebated rim would be like the 204 and 223 cases that we have in our contender barrels now. I would think this one would headspace on the case mouth and base of cartridge against the action face, like some others do. More info should be forth coming from either Winchester or future info on Shot Show information and new products. I keep looking. But it does peek my interest as I would think it would be a lot more potent that the 357 Max. Bill K :)

If you find a 357 mag barrel and want to ream it out to a max I'll loan you my Manson reamer. I just built a max but I'm waiting to get paid before I buy bullets so I can shoot it.

Thanks for the offer Aaron. And thanks to everyone who replied. It looks like I am going to have another go at the 45/70! There will be a 16” 45/70 barrel coming to live at my house.

SEM, your advice will be heeded. I will likely load this just fast enough to keep the bullets from bouncing off a deer. Maybe between the long barrel and downloaded ammo I can avoid getting beat up too badly this time.

Again, thanks for all the offers and advice.

Can the 45-70 be any worse, for a better term, than my 15 inch 375 JDJ ? With a good set of grips and the muzzle brake it is very manageable and fun to shoot. And it does put down deer and coyotes, with the 270 to 300 grain sp's. You may well enjoy that 45-70. Hope so. Bill K :)
