I am doing a 17 Remington Fireball project on a Handi Rifle. I have stubbed off a barrel and bored it to .800 through the chamber area. I have a .17 cal barrel I have turned the breach end to .800 and will thread the breach end 20 tpi, this will leave the chamber area diameter .735 not counting the threads. This will leave the chamber walls .180 thick plus the threads. Is this wall thickness enough for a .17 Rem FB or will I blow my self up again? Larry

Does the stub metal count in the thickness ?

Totterlg, if the stub is bored to.800 and the barrel shank is turned to.800 Doesn't that leave a net thread engagement of .000 what am I missing?

I do one other little trick. I make a sleeve/nut and counter bore the breach end for a half inch to tighten everything up. Larry

O.K. That works,(nice work by the way) Bob Snapp the Martini Guru commonly chambers the small cadet action to .17 rem. with no problem.
This action uses a 3/4-16 thread so the .800 dia.shank you have should give no problems please keep us posted this looks like a neat project

Thank you for the information, the 17 fireball is a 55,000 psi round so is less than the 17 Remington, I have one of those, but I was afraid the short barrel would just not be able to burn all the powder in a 17 Rem case. When I assembled unit I coated everything including the threads with JB weld and then screwed it together, so all the voids are filled, I had a fit of about .001 anyway, so I would think I would get some support from the stub also. I drilled and pinned the barrel at the front of the stub just for good measure. Larry

I cut the chamber tonight, I got the reamer today, PTG floating pilot, it does cut a nice chamber. I used factory brass to set the depth, cut it so it is just barely high, I would say about .0002 or so, with these break actions you only get one try, so if it is a little high I will put a couple more turns on the reamer by hand, but the rifle closes and locks up tight, so I think life is good. I will cut the ejector notch when I get the ejector. Larry

Very interested in your project and was wondering if you've made any progress. I would like to do the same thing with my TCR.

Thanks for your photos and information to date.

I have been on a ship at sea for the last two weeks, I will be home next thursday, so I will cut the extractor slot and be done with it. I will post some finished pictures and let you know how it shoots. Larry

I shot it today and it didn't blow up. I put 18 factory rounds through it, I have a fixed 4X scope, and I got the last three inside of 1 inch at 200 yards. Probably a lot of luck with that one as I was getting the same at 100 yards. I think that for a H&R this is about as good as it will get. Seems that running the barrel "backwards" (using the breach end for the muzzel end) didn't hurt the accuracy much, so life it good. I will post some pictures when I can, it weighs a little under 6 pounds. Larry
