Michael, looks great so far. Are the lines on the grip for a set of finger grooves? I had thought of doing that on mine. I am also going to add a forend tip and grip cap. I thought I might go with some exotic burl although I have my eye on a piece of Spalted maple that might work.
I don't know about you but I have found this stockwork to be very enjoyable. And when you are all done you can say " I did it ".

Yep I thought I'd add some finger grooves. I do a fair amount of trim carpentry work and like the finish work quite a bit. Getting ready to begin another whole house trim build out

G,Day all.
Mntngoat, thats a nice looking piece of wood. Pardon the dumb question but is Bastone a type of walnut or something completely different? Are the holes in the humbhole area picture caused by insects / grubs or is it a natural vesicule in that type of timber? What will you fill them with? Im asking because Im looking at building a laminated stock out of locally available hardwoods in my area of N,East Victoria, Australia.

Cheers from the lower Right Hand corner of Aus
Jethro.

Jethro, Bastonge is a variety of walnut, just like English, black, claro, Turkish etc..... The pin holes are burls and are caused by deformed growth of the grain. They are basically small tight knots. I will fill them with epoxy mixed with stain.

G,day Mntngoat
In many of our native hardwoods in this area we have termites that will burrow a main gallery through the heartwood of the tree and then they put out little offshoots just big enough to fit one insect. These usually have a dark ring similar to the burls in your Walnut stock, I like the look it gives furniture as long as they are not too big or numerous.
Once you have filled the burl holes with epoxy/stain what type of finish will you apply to the stock. Oil or two pack or ???
Thanks for the prompt answer. Please post more pics as work progresses.
Jethro ;)

I will use Permalyn.
It has worked very well for two other stocks I finished.
