The standard 243 Win uses a 22" to 24" barrel, with a 1-10 twist. I just got back from my smith my new 243 Win. It sports a 29" Krieger MTU flutted 1-8.5 twist barrel. Im not sure what powder to use? I plan on shooting the berger 100, to 105gr bullets. The charts show's Varget (#84), 4064 (#86), H4350 (#100), Viht N-160 (#101), and H4831 (#103) on the burn chart. What would be a good powder to start with? Im going out on Sunday to break the barrel in.

Hard to go wrong with Varget with the .243!

I have had good luck with N160.

On my .243 loads using heavier bullets 87 Gr. and above I've always had my best luck with IMR 4350 some powders have given me slightly more velocity but the IMR 4350 has always given me the best accuracy.

I like Varget for the lighter bullets but for the 100 grain to 105 grain, H-4350 is going to be hard to beat. I've been using a .243 in one form or another for many years and I would start with the H-4350...Good luck..

I have a 243 with a 27" Broughton barrel 1-8 twist shooting the 105 A-Max and I'm having some great luck with Retumbo, 48.5gr. BE CAREFUL AND STEP DOWN A FEW GRAINS! (disclaimer) 49.0 is compressed could not tell you a velocity but slower seems to be better with the heavy bullets and long barrels. Hope this helps! Later,

I have to agree with 17 shooter on his choice of H4350. That's been my go-to powder for the .243 for many years.

I shoot H4350 in my new sako 243 75 with sierra 75gr hollow point
and rifle is not broken in yet. I get close to 3/4" . I called the factory
and they said to stay with heavy loads so I think I shoot 44gr.

My ruger 243 VT really likes reloader 22 with the heavy bullets. Actually several of my rifles really love the stuff ;

of IMR and H 4350 with a Win primer with a 100g Bullet.

To be specific, I shoot 42.3g of EIther IMR or H 4350 with a Win primer with a 100g Hornady BTSP with amazing accuracy out of a 9 1/4" twist.

R#22 loads are at the red line of Max with a Win Primer, lot # vary so if your gun likes it, buy several 5 lb kegs of the same lot#.

Good luck!

Im using H4831SC and in my Broughton 8 twist. 46grs yields 3100fps on the money. Could go higher on the powder charge and drive them a bit faster. 3200-3250fps the Berger VLD's really fly flat!

Seems for me Nosler 70gr B-Tips, Varget, and REM 9 1/2 primers, has been the magic load for 3 different rifles.
