I already know what the answer is but I have to ask.

Does 22.2 grains of N135 behind a 30 grain Berger Match Varmint bullet, with a BR4 primer, 6 thou off the lands, in a remington 700 17 Remington seem excessive. I will tell you that I have gotten this load from a rather infamous loading book that indicates this is the middle of the road for pressures. I understand that all guns are different, etc.....but thought this might be a good starting point. Long story short.....blew the primer out of the second shot in a 5 shot string yesterday. Mid 60's, new brass, 5th shot after a cleaning. No soak, weighed the other three un-shot rounds and they were right on. Ideas?

Could be a good "Idea" to back off a little. Larry

absolutely! but doesn't this load seem to be in the middle of the road for pressures? I have never had a problem with this gun and excessive pressure, even in loads approaching "max".

I see 22.8gr max with a 25gr bullet, so 22.2gr is 97% of the 25 gr load and the 30gr bullet is 20% heavier than the 25gr bullet. I would not be surprised if it blew a primer. I know it doesn't exactly work this way but it is a place to start and do a reality check. Larry

Were you using Kindler's book?

the data was out of a published book. Not gonna smear anyone's book or name. Just trying to get a windage check on this load. I have heard though, that Todd's loads are a bit on the hot side and should be approached with caution.

I am loading 22.4 gr of VV135 with the 27gr Kindler bullets and have been getting 9 reloads and then the primer pockets are loose. The speed is 3900fps give or take. FWIW.

When I was shoot a lot of 600 yard stuff with my .17rem I used some N135 with very good elevation results. My barrel was a 9 twist and I was using 30gr Berger flat base bullets. The load was 21grs of N135 which yielded 3750-3800fps with no pressure signs in the middle of the summer here in NC where its usually over 100 degrees. Nesika action.

Sounds like your 22.2 gr load is a bit warm for your gun. Having that extra 50fps of velocity is not necessary:)) Well maybe....... Back off till the primers stay put and you can still get the bolt open then you are good to go:))))
