I am thinking of converting my Remington Mod 700 Classic in 221 Fireball to 17 Tactical. Is this a good way to go or should I get a 700 in 223 Rem to convert? I believe the 17 Tact's OAL is greater than the 221 FB correct? can anyone provide some data please? thanks

17Varminter,
I think you would be better off basing your build on a .223 Rem 700 action or the like (17Rem, 222Rem, 204Ruger). I recently was going to go the other way and convert a 17Rem LVSF 700 to .221 Fireball and discovered that there would be extraction issues. The extractors are actually different between the two. You may have no special problems going from a 221 to the tactical. But I did a quick test with mine. I took a .221 Fireball empty case and chambered it in my .17 Rem, and it would not extract all the way, bummer. But you may be alright going the other way. Something to think about.

Thanks a lot for your input. I also have a spare Cooper Phoenix in 20 Tact. Would that make more sense? I was actually saving it for my sons when they became old enough...
