All,

I am ordering a new Rifle for the 17 Tactical Caliber. I want to be able to fire bullets 30-40gr bullets. What twist rate should I use? I am thinking 1:8" and barrel length? I am thinking 24".

Any thoughts?

A 1/9" twist will work, 26" is optimal for the 17 Tac. BTW if you shoot anything over 30gr bullets you'll need a 1/6" twist to stabilize the round. If you go with the 1/6" twist and shoot 25gr or lower bullets you run the risk of blowing the bullets up, ie, spining the bulletso fast they break apart.

Have you considered the Tac20?

I own two 20 Tacts already. I love the 17 cals, so a 17 tact is a must.

I'd stick with the 30's in the 17 caliber. a 9 twist will work fine. No reason to spin them too fast.

The Lilja 10 twist has done me very well with the 30 gr. Bergers, I',ve had three of those barrels, all shot good. We did A ballistic sheet on the 30 Berger and the old 36 gr Bergers.with that 6 twist barrel. With the extra velocity of the 30 it came out to where buying the 6 twist barrel was not worth it, and your stuck shooting only the 36 gr. I built a 15# custom .17 Rem with the 10 twist Lilja that was just flat out amazing with accuracy. Put the money into a Lilja and A semi tight spec reamer and you cant go wrong.Pete

I use the 9" twist Lilja also with the 30 Gr. Woodchuck Den Gold bullets and they are going to be hard to beat. I'm not a big fan of long barrels so I had mine cut at 24" . I get slightly over 4000 fps with that bullet. Accuracy is awesome, its very flat shooting and deadly. I killed my first Coyote with it about a week ago and it was a bang flop. Good advice above about the 6" twist. I wouldn't go there. George

Nice George! Am out to build another .17 will have to try a 9 twist! What were you using A 17 Rem case? Got that 30 gr. going out to max! That Ruger 204 necked down would be a screamer .I just picked up a Ruger #1 action, will do another saunders Jet in that one, will use a 9 twist . Pete
