Just purchased a rifle in 243 Winchester. Biggest thing in the safe next to the 17's and 19's. Need a recommendation as to best bullet weight for deer and antelope hunting in NE. Will be used primarily for eastern NE whitetails and coyotes.
Thanks

Dick,

My load is a stiff one of IMR4064 with the 100 Gr Sierra Pro Hunter Boattail. It is fast and accurate and is a great bullet on game in the deer/antelope size range. For coyotes, if you aren't saving fur, try the 87 VMax and the Sierra 80 Gr Blitz bullet with the 4064 as well.

Thanks Charlie
Have you ever tried H4895 powder?

never had to try the H4895. 4064 works so well I never did try much of anything else. Great speed and accuracy.

The one load I did try when I first got my VLS in 243 was IMR3031 with a 58 gr Vmax. That load was not very speedy, but it was super accurate and sub-moa out to 300 yards before the wind got it.

I have had great success on Coyote and Whitetail using the Sierra 85 gr. hollow point boat tail bullets. Our eastern Whitetail are not huge, generally speaking, and I have had deer go down after one or two "leaps" with good bullet placement. I took a big old Coyote with the same bullet, and he ran maybe 30 yards. I like Winchester 760 and Hodgdon 4350 powders with this bullet. Good Shooting, Ed

4350 and 95gr nosler work great in mine.

Lots harder to find a bad rather than good bullet. I like several. 70 Gr Blitzkings are great for varmints. The 87 Gr Hornady interloc is a great deer/antelope bullet. With the heavier bullets try IMR 7828 I've had very good results with it along with IMR 4350.

Accurate 2700 and the Hornady 75 grain V-max and the 80 grain Sierra Varmint bullets work well for me with Win LRMAG primers.

For deer I use the Sierra 100 grain pro hunter with H-414 and the same primer. Good luck. Sam

We took 3 antelope with the same 243 using Barnes 85gr TSX and 4064 this year in Wyoming. Each lope took a single shot. All at 150 yds or so. 2 dropped in there tracks and one was running when shot and only went 50 yds. I did not crony the load but 3 shot groups were .5". Savage model 11 with wood stock.

Dick, Either 4895 is also good. My 243 has always been easy to load for. Kenny

Thanks Sicero
H4895 was what I finally used. 3225 fps with an 80 gr Sierra SPBT. Should work well with deer and coyotes. Furs is SE NE are not worth anything.
