Hi Folks!

New guy here that's about to receive a re-chambered Savage 204 Ruger barrel in 20x47 Lapua. I bought the reamer from the PT&G specials page but wanted to test things out on a cheap barrel before spending the coin on a custom tube.

Anyways, I was wondering if any of you could help me out with starting loads for 40/50g bullets. I plan on using the 40's as the barrel is a 1:12 twist but may try the 50g Berger just to see if it'll fly straight.

Can anyone give me a safe place to start? I usually keep H4895, Varget, R-15, R-10x, H4198, IMR 4064, IMR 3031 on hand.....also have slower stuff but thought this would be in the correct burn range for the case size.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Mntngoat!

Just to make sure though......those are starting loads correct? If not, this is
gonna be a short project as my 20 BR will smoke those numbers! :D

I really need to get QL - does it actually have data for the 20x47L or are you creating your own parameters, etc.

Got anything for H4895? I can't get Ramshot powders locally without paying out the wazoo for 'em. Hodgdon, IMR and Alliant are what I use most.

Thanks again!

I used the 20 Satan parameters in QL. Below are a couple screen shots.

QL Is useful but it does have its limitations. I find for starting loads it's great, but I can usually get more velocity than what it says I should.

Yes I would consider this starting loads. if you look at the box on the right it shows the case capacity at mid 80%.

The first picture is for for berger 40 and 2nd for the 50's

I dont think they are starting loads!!. Looking at the red pressure curve on the graphs, it is very close to the pink area, that is perfect pressure wise and where you want to end up not where you want to start, or at least thats how I read the instructions on my significantly older version.

Personally I would come down 10% and work back up.

Looking at the volume of powder used this would easily fit into a 20BR case.

Thanks again Mntngoat, you went above and beyond!

Alycidon, thanks for looking out for me. However, I think the pressure should be fine. Leave the little graph thingy out of it for now and look at what the psi box says. 47-48K psi isn't what I would call max pressure. Don't worry, I'm always safe at the reloading table!

Mntngoat, I'll keep you posted on my progress as I get this thing up and running.
