I think it is a good idea. Are you using the Hornady bullets? I don't know of any other .204" soft point bullets. They have a better sectional density than the 40's and may work very well. Although they don't have the BC that the V-Max's do. I would suggest you call Hornady and Hodgdon for load data and powder choices. They have been very helpful to me. Keep us posted, Peter.

I wish that some day a manufacturer would make a polymer tip bullet in a 45 or 46gr wt. ;)

Vartargs are normally a slower twist for 30-40 grain bullets, I would think for the 45 you would want a 1 in 9 or 1 in 10 twist. Cant see anything on Hornadys site about twist rates though.

yes, i believe they are Hornady bullets, bought at Midway,...:)

yes, i undrestand about the twist rate 1/9 for heavier bullets,

but, would like to see if they would work, in the 20 Vartarg,

my 204 with a 1/12, 26 inch barrel, will shoot the 45's in a clover, 3 shots

at 100 yards, {:O)

If they are 45s then then as far as I am aware Hornady are the only people making a 45gr 20 cal.

I shall maybe try a few in a 1 in 9 before to long.

someone else making them. Due to my poor memory, I can't remember who they are, and as soon as i figure it out, I will post it on here. Just saw them again, the other day. Darn!

Gunhaus makes a 45 Gr bullet. But there really isn't much sense in shooting these bullets out of a Vartarg.

well, shot some 45's out of the 20 vartarg:

3 shot groups:

1 group had 2 bullets in one hole 0.494

1 group had had another 2 bullets one hole 0.922, i guess i got to excited

when i saw the one holer, and pulled the other shot:o i guess, lol:D

the other was 0.717,

the other was 0.853,

looks like some want to group, need to do some more shooting,

sure do like the 20 vartarg,..:D;)

weight sorting the bullets, i am totally curious on this one. Weigh each charge, totally prep the brass, whatever it takes. I would also like to know which powder, primer, etc. Formed brass, virgin? Rifle? SAAMI chamber? Custom? Inquiring minds....

my 20 Vartarg is on a remington 700 sps small bolt action ,

but believe it is a douglas , 1/12 twist,

rechamber it for the 20 vartarg,..

don't know all the other stuff, like what chamber and all that,

i'm pretty new to this,..lol..:D :) sorry,..

H4198 or IMR 4198 would be my first powder to try. Probably start at around 15gr. My experience has been, the 45 Hornady soft point works fine in a 12 twist. The fastest way to gain performance in the small cases is go with a heavy bullet. Velocity is nice, K energy does the work. Kenny

1:12 works fine for the 45 gr from Hornady
