stainless steel cleaning rod
 

HI a friend ask me about using one of these cleaning rod.I use nothing but coated or carbon fiber rod I told my friend i would;nt use a stainless rod in any of my guns. What do you guy;s think.. 20vt

Personally I believe that the type of cleaning rid you use is just a matter of personal preference. So long as you are using a bore guide and a one piece rod, I think all will be fine. Stainless rods have always been OK with me and my custom rifles.

I use nothing but Pro shot stainless rods for everything from 17 on up. All the coated rods I've used, primarily Dewey, had too much flex and the coating came right off. Usually bad technique and lack of a bore guide will create more problems than the rod. Whenever I go to a BR match I see both, sometimes a guy will be using both, one to swab, one to patch.

I oddly enough have had my problems with the steel rods. I think some of my issues were because of my lack of a proper tight fitting brush bore guide and my brushing technique of not bracing the rod in my early days. Proper brush size and patch size came into play as well. Ever see a shooter run a patch down a barrel that is too big for the bore......the cleaning rod is a semicircle. Everyone has to gain that type of experience; so did I. Choose the right components to work together. Believe it or not, rod sizes vary in diameter just like patch sizes for a specific bore.

I learned(actually was "told" I might say by some old benchresters) later to brace the rod on the stock with my non rod hand and let the cleaning stand hold the gun. I have seen coated rods eaten up, but those instances did not know about a proper cleaning rod guide and cleaning components.

Since I shot benchrest, I have had the same set of Dewey coated rods, they are 15 years old and still ok; not bent or coating missing. I bought another set of 44" rods, a pair; but have not needed them yet.
