20 Vartarg Help Vertical Stringing

Need some help. I have been trying to get a Howa Mini 20vt to shoot and can't get rid of vertical stringing. I also have what appear to be low velocities for loads I have seen listed. The gun has a 10" twist proof barrel with a .234 neck and .050 freebore. I know should have been zero but that is what my smith had. I am loading 40 gr VMaxs with AA 2200 18.2 to 18.7 gr and have not seen over 3200fps. Have tried seating depths from .020 to .100 off the lands. Zero horizontal all vertical 1.25 Inch groups. I actually switched stocks rebedded, different rests and exact same result. I switch guns at the range and shoot .2s and .3s. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you tried more than one powder ? And maybe even a different bullet ?
Could be your rifle does not like what you have been using.

Only combo tried as it is a brand new build. Any recommendations?

AA2200 and RL 10 are two powders that many use in the 20VT.

I work around the 19.5 to 20.3 grains with a 32 lead free Nosler ( I must be lead free for hunting in my commie state)
Very accurate for me, but work up with yours to be safe.

i think bill gave you good advice and yes that is slow. might heat it up a little with more powder and keep an eye on the chronograph. what chro are you using? is it freestanding or go on the end of the barrel? the barrel is free floated, right? check the barrel crown with a magnifying glass. a bur in the wrong place can cause vertical stringing.

when you bedded did you bed the recoil lug or did you put a pad just in front of the recoil lug?
absolutely try different bullet weights and manufacturers.

That is a good bullet, but many 20 VT shooters use the 39 grn Sierra BK,with some impressive groups and it does a good number on critters. :)

What powder? Did I miss it? Given the charge, not H-4198. That would be scary.

Ignition problem? High SDs? If so, what primers?

Scope issue?

Does the barrel feel funky in spots when you clean it?

A puzzlement.

What powder is the 18.2- 18.7 load?
What powders do you have?
Bills advice is good, I havent shot or know of a 20VT that doesn't like AA2200. I know the primer situation sucks but I've found Rem 7.5's across the board to be my most accurate primers in different 20 cals until I step up to the BR case then 450's win.
I dont know how many rounds on your barrel but almost all barrels speed up from the 35-100 round mark around 20-75fps depending on barrel.

Edited to AA2200 in original. I am using 7 1/2 primers but do have cci and Feds too. The bedding does have a pad under 1st inch of barrel shank in front of the lug. Tried in two different stocks and no change. Also changed scope and rings just in case. I will take the advice of powder and bullet change. Just hate that as I am stocked up on 2200 and 40 grainers.
