.223 Rem loads using IMR 4227 or Alliant 2400?

Does anyone here have experience with these two powders in the .223 Rem? I've seen both listed in reloading manuals in the past, and Alliant still lists loads using 2400 for 50 and 55 gr bullets on their website. How much of a .223 case is filled with 15 gr of 4227 or 2400, is it a bulky powder? I'd like to use a bulky powder so that there isn't any worry about powder position in the case when firing, and so that I can't accidentally double-charge without overflowing the case. Thanks.

I've had good results shooting 2400 in a 223 using a 45 grain Hornady Hornet bullet. Velocity was ~3000 fps and the smaller amount of powder kept the barrel cooler and helped reduce the muzzle blast. I don't have my reloading notes handy, but it seems that I was using somewhere around 13-15 grains of 2400, and even at 13, a double charge would not fit into the case.

Reduced .223 Loads

If you are interested in reduced loads for the .223, check out the dope on the jamescalhoon.com and reloadingroom.com websites. I tried 35, 40 and 50 gr V-Max's with various charges of Blue Dot. (That's what I happened to have on hand.) Never could get the lighter bullets to group out of my Model 7, but the 50 gr shot very well. Muzzle blast and noise were greatly reduced in the short barreled M7. Vic

Just started playing with IMR-4227 and 60gr Hornady TAP protected point bullets mainly because I have a thousand or so bullets and a full can of 4227. Just looking for a good practice load for offhand and general plinking. Don't remember the exact charges but went by an old IMR booklet. Every charge went around .65" to 1.10" for 3 shot groups @ 100 yds. Figure this will be a good way to get some free practice time. Will go back a chrono the loads in the morning and double check groups.

Was fooling around with some old surplus powder from my 44 mag days and found a great load w/ #2400 and 40gr Moly Coated V-Max bullets. Won't post the charge as it's a warm load but it shoots tiny groups with less felt recoil and blast. Great powder for this LVSF in 223.

We are talking 'large pistol' powders here. They do work and with lighter bullets, can achieve the same velocities as the 'normal' powders would produce. The case will have a lot of air space in it and there is definately less muzzle blast. In my mini-14, although I was getting good velocity, the action did not have enough movement to pick up another round - but did eject the fired case. I was only doing tests over a chronoghraph and for groups. Did not shoot great in my rifle. (I did get good, reduced load accuracy using 'small pistol' powder).

Also do a search at Rocky Raab . com. He has a lot of data there on 223 and OTHER powders. He is the "real deal". He served 2 Combat tours in 'nam as a Forward Air Controler and later was The Voice of NASA. He knows of what he speaks.

Best wishes, Bill

I have used IMR4227 with the 45 gr hornady bullet. 15 gr only filled the case about 60% but never had any problems with it. Don't know what the velocity was but they shot under 1 MOA / 100yd in my sako 223.
