Default Length of Hornady .224 50 gr SPSX

Anyone have a Hornady 50 gr SPSX bullet laying around they can give me the overall length of (base to tip). I have been trying to work up a subsonic load for the 221 fireball and am looking for the shortest 50 bullet I can find. Currently the shortest 50 grainer I have is the Midsouth Varmint Nightmare Extreme at .645".

Thanks for the help,

Ryan

Thank you sir. Looks like they are maybe just a tad shorter than the Midsouth Varmint Nightmare Extreme.

Too bad they are sold out everywhere....

I got ambitious and dug out my spreadsheet of bullets.

Speer #1029 50gr Spitzer FB, 0.638-0.639"

Hornady #2240 50gr SXFB, 0.646-0.649"

Sierra #1330 50gr Spitzer FB, 0.667-0.671" old SFS

Sierra #1330 50gr Spitzer FB, 0.672-0.675" Sedalia

Sierra #1340 50gr Blitz FB, 0.664-0.667"

These were typically measured in a group of 5 for each bullet I had.

Hope this helps.

Default Hornady .224 50gr SPSX Bullets

50gr SPSX are very good for DRT on woodchucks out of a 222 Rem.

My go to bullets for that purpose. Very accurate, and effective. Most do not exit.

Peter.

Peter,

I'm getting close to doing some "live" testing. They claim rapid expansion even at low velocities for the Midsouth bullet. Hopefully they work as well as the SPSX. As soon as the SPSX becomes available I'll have to pick up some to try.

Somewhere in the the reloading room are a bunch of 50 gr. R-P PLHP bullets that it think would be perfect for this application, but I can't seem to find them.
I have some 22 bullets cast with linotype if you want to consider that route.

Doesn't Speer still make the 33gr. HP?

Not sure what velocity number you’re working towards in the 221 but I bought some of these 50 SPSX to use in my blue dot loads in the 223 and they do not expand for me at the 1300 FPS that I load them at.
