Forming 17 Ackley ?
I've heard others say you should neck 22 Hornet brass in stages. I have dies for a 19 Calhoon which is based on the 22 Hornet case. Can I neck the 22 Hornet to 19 Calhoon and then from 19 Calhoon to 17 AH? Has anyone tried this or should I just give up the $$ and buy the form die? Thanks for your help.-carl

17ah
They say you can just use a FL and a seater to form down to 17 cal. Some even with the FL sizer only. I have done it both of those ways and it works, but I seemed to have lost about.015" off the length as if I formed with my form dies. I think you'll be ok doing it with what you have. Saves the expense of high dollar form dies. Good luck and good shooting. Tom

The 17AH FL die will do the trick; I had issues on Rem brass (higher volume, so maybe thinner brass?). With Win brass is was just a matter of setting up the right amount of sizing, to get a snug fit in the chamber. On my list of things to do is to polish the inside of the FL die, as that has helped many size down anything brand you feed it.
The 17AH is a hoot to shoot! Added: do a search on the main forum page, and there should be lots of hits on 17AH brass. Common topic on this board ! Greg Last edited by Mulerider; 11-25-2008 at 06:06 PM. |

17 hornet
I would also anneal the necks. I had problems with the case blowing out upon forming till I started to anneal. Fired 200 cases and all turned out perfect.
