Harbor Freight is probably the cheapest and best buy. Calipers are not precision instruments. They're ballpark ones. Unless using them every day in a money making operation, IMO, there's no sense in spending a ton of money on them.

I've been very happy with my igauging set. I don't recall the price but it was well worth it.

I have a couple lesser expensive calipers and a Mitutoyo caliper. They all read nearly the same but when you I use the Mitutoyo's then grab one of the others you can really feel the difference in quality of the Mitutoyo's.

They aren't all that expensive and IMO definitely worth the extra coin.

The best caliper I have is an old manual Mitutoyo (non-dial). Very consistent. I also have a couple 12" and 24" dial calipers - Mitutoyo also that were given to me when they were tossed by the QC manager. Typically, they were dropped and bent or broke the tips of the jaws. I ground or filed the tips to clean up. Work fine for reloading. I do have standard gauge blocks to check their function and calibration.

Not needing a real fancy and high priced one, I bought the one put out by Hornady, several years ago, it has worked just fine for me.

Thumbs up

I'll echo that Mitutoyo builds a quality caliper.

You can usually find great deals on them on eBay.

I have the Frankford Arsenal digital caliper and it has worked great. Cost about $30 dollars.

Bob: Best thats ever been made

are the Brown & Sharp tools.
Higher priced too.

Study the offerings on MSC Tools.

That's where most machinists buy such toys.
I've bought a few grand of such from them
over the years. Good company, quick turn around
and they stand up to what they sell. You don't like
it, call 'em and send it back, or exchange. They have
several brands of both USA made and imports. compare
pricing and what they've written up.

At times they have combo sets. I got a set of 4', 6" and 12"
for lathe work on a big sale for $60 the set.

Mitutoyo is jap shit again but, good stuff. In the
machine shop of early 60's I worked in, we got
a set of both at company cost. Used the jap stuff
for working tools and B/S when it really counted
on accuracy.

TinMan: It takes mighty sharp eye's to read those
without dials. Not too many folks know how to read
them even. That's a lot of why dial types were invented.
