22TCM case that I filed the neck off of to get a good idea of case fill under the bullet. It held 13.6 of 300MP and 13.5 of AA2200.

Like Waska said, we are in the process, along with many others I'm sure, of necking it down to 17 and getting a reamer made. I will be doing a tight neck version that will require neck turning. Didn't get a chance to check neck consistency yet, have to cut a mandrel shorter first, lol
17VHA, 17/22 TCMx2 17FB and the 17/23SMc

I'd like to push the shoulder back a tad , to get more neck lenght, question is, how much does a guy need for a 17 cal ? This one is right at .180, IIRC. Might try .200 and see how that looks. Rays Boomer is .250, I want to go a little shorter than that to maintain a capacity edge over the 17Boomer, cause if I can't beat ray and Don, what's the point?!?!

Close up of the TCM next to my tightneck 17VHA for comparison. I think the neck lenght should at least equal the VHA, I know it works for accuracy..
17, 20 ,22 TCM and the VHA I have to get a new shorter body die to get the shoulder back any farther, this is a far as my pbike527 tool will go. I'm going to see if Paul can send me another one .200 or so shorter.

Bow---- i like the idea of a .200 neck. My .250 neck is excessive on such a short case but I wanted Eddie to use an existing reamer. Using that reamer i had a series of cases made in .160 shorter steps. That was about 4 gr volume difference per step. I was expecting a bigger difference in velocities between them. I hope it works for you, good luck.

My question is: "What's the reasoning for going to a 40* shoulder"?
Looks like all you're getting is more case capacity. And by going with the TCM necked down to 17, you're after less capacity? Other than no easy availability of a bolt face for the 17 VHA, the VHA would be a better choice? I liked the TCM case because it cut out most of the hard work of making a "short" version of the 20 VT. Mikie likes most everything. |

I am of the belief that a 40 degree shoulder gives you less case stretch, hence longer case life.

I just like the looks of straight side wall, 40* shoulder and long necks on a case. Most everything i have has some or all of these features.

A chap by the name of Blaine Eddy used to hang out here and if I recall correctly, his rule of thumb was neck length = 1.5 x bullet diameter.
