Default 17hh

Redding FL dies, N120 as it seems to be easier to find than 1680 and priced the same. Rem 7 1/2's with Vmax 20's right now as they seem the only capable bullet that's easy to find in qty. Have used the Midsouth cheapie, its just not as accurate but more than capable for high volume shooting.

Chuck have you chrono'd your N120 load? Originally some stated that it wasn't much of a powder in the .17 Hornet but as well as in works in my .17 Ackley Hornets I find it hard to fathom that . I have a bunch of N120 and like a lotta aspects of it so it was my next powder to test. Guess I'm kinda trying to cheat off your homework .

As with Doug - I use and like my Hornady dies. I usually also pick up the micrometer seating stem replacement. Some guys have bad mouthed the dies, but they have been stellar for me- just counted them: I have 6 sets of Hornady dies at this time. The 7th set went with my .218Bee Ruger #1 when it sold and the 8th set went with the .375Winchester - I used .38/55 dies- worked perfectly.

Certainly have the accuracy down cold, great shooting ! Did you go up from the 10.8 grain load with the 20's or did you just stop with that great accuracy?
Thanks for sharing! N120 sure is the magic dust in my .17 Ackley Hornet and I suspected the .17 Hornady Hornet would be fond of it as well but as always the rifle decides.

Thanks Doug... yeah pretty happy with it

I didn't progress beyond 10.8gr (which is also what the Hornady load data chart stopped at...) but they are fairly moderate loads with no pressure signs and could probably go a tad higher to around 3500fps.

RWS 4033 primers give a useful velocity boost of around ~60fps:

Default n120 and the 17HH

I'm at 11grs and it's pushing 3500 in my CZ, 3550 in my Martini with a 1" shorter barrel. Not sure why it just is what it is that the Martini is a tad faster. Only reason I swapped to N120 from 1680 is that it became available while the 1680 prices right now are higher if you can find it.

I agree that Lil'Gun is a hot load for the HH in my Ruger 77/17. When I load for it I am using below published data and I load carefully but I am getting good results with both speed and accuracy.
With H4198 I get very good results with both 20 and 25 grain Hornady bullets.
My most accurate has been with the 25 grain Hornady 1710's. These are the hollow point bullets.
I believe that my Ruger may have a fast barrel which is why I am getting higher than published speeds at lower charges.
The early HH cases and ammunition from Hornady develop a bulge near the base when firing that I have found to happen with nearly all rifles during my research. I actually sent the rifle back to Ruger to look at when I started reloading for it. I have since found that it happens with Savage rifles also.
I would love to be able to get something other than Hornady cases but haven't found anything.
