Default 17 squirrel Contender barrel length

I am going to be ordering a 17 squirrel rifle barrel soon and I’m curious what length seems to be the most popular. This will be a varmint/coyote rifle using a Contender frame. I have a tripod I’ll use while varmint hunting. MGM only has bull barrel profiles so weight is a factor.

Thanks!

I am admittedly biased. I favor longer barrels, even for small powder-charge cartridges like the 17 Squirrel or 22 LR. The muzzle blast is further from my ears. A 24" barrel on your Contender frame would make for a compact rifle compared to a bolt action or an AR with a 24" barrel.

My .22 Squirrel Contender barrel is a tapered 21" and it is a very handy little gun.

A cartridge with the squirrel case capacity, 8.5gr H2O If I remember correctly, is almost 99% used up at 18". I use an 18.75" barrel and with a 12.7 grain water capacity It's a lot quieter than a 16" barrel. It is noticeable. If you went for a 21 or longer barrel you might find it's a lot quieter but I'm not sure that anything beyond 18" is really going to gain you much except for weight. Then again if you want it super quiet use trail boss and a 24" barrel and there won't be much left as it leaves the muzzle in the way of pressure.

When I put my suppressor on my 14" 17TCM imp it sounds like a pellet gun. Very quiet! I'm gonna find out what a 17 squirrel sounds like soon enough.

I have a suppressor for this rifle as well so noise isn’t an issue. Depending on what I’m doing with it I may or may not use the suppressor.

I would go with 16.5 to 18 inches because the suppressor installed on it will still make for a nice short handy rig. You don’t gain that much velocity after 16 inches in the 17 squirrel anyhow. So why not make a nice short rig while suppressed?
