long shot,
Good job of guiding your son through this process, but allowing him to make his own decisions. We look forward to having this young man join the brotherhood of gun nuts in the near future and that ain't a bad thing for a guy to be interested in.

Picked up the Savage model 12 LRP end of last year, love it. Low recoil, accurate with factory 140's. Lots to love about the round.

Took it out a couple of weeks ago and was ringing steel at 500 yards first shot - zeroed at 200.

i have a 260 on a long action. i am very happy with it. low recoil excellent accuracy and components, and with the long action you can seat the longer heavier bullets out and not run out of magazine room.
varmints? there are the 85 and 100 gr. maybe not true varmint weights, but they sure do work!--cam

I have built both .Ballistically they are the same .If you have a long action do the 6.5-06 it will feed fine ,the 6.5 284 will give you trouble in a long action .Of course if you have the short action you would have to do the 6.5 -284.

You know, no one has mentioned the 6.5x55, which always benifits from being in the long action, has quality brass available, is proven to be extremely accurate, has factory ammo available in a pinch, nearly duplicates the 6.5/06, and the 6.5/284 when properly handloaded, and does so with a bit less powder, and recoil. Plus it's a pussy cat to reload, something the larger and more exotic 6.5 case can;t always be accused of.

Long Shot- which ever way he goes and there have been many suggestions here, have it chambered so it can utilize those long 160gr bullets. They are what the 6.5mm reputation has always been based on.

I personally want to build a 6mm-06. I like the idea of pushing the moderate weight bullets close to 4k. I shoot a 7x64 bren. and that or the twin 280 rem. are some real sweethearts. I think nosler is offering 280imp. brass if thats an option.
Should be a fun project.

Here is the old girl that will give her "heart" and be reborn. The barrel is actually in really nice condition inside and out. He might be able to get a few bucks for the stock and barrel on GB. Might be someone out there looking to rehab a junker.
