It's what's left of a 40 grainer we found underneath the 675Y plate.

Default The journey..

I just wanted to finish this thread with what had happened.

As it turned out the guy selling those two 5mmFBI's got back to me and we were able to figure out a trade for both rifles. 5mm FBI is basically 20-221FB improved with a 40 degree shoulder.

The reamer came with the trade and 300+ brass. Not all of the brass was FF'ed though. After a while I found out the M700 benchrest rifle wasn't chambered the same as the CZ527, there were two different GS's involved, one for each rifle. The result being the brass shot in the M700 wouldn't fit in the CZ.

I got a Wilson custom seater die and a shoulder bump die with the rifles as well. After a few firings the brass was tight fitting in the chamber at the web area for both rifles. So I sent Whidden the brass that had been shot 3 times in the CZ, they made a sizer for me, that whidden die just showed up a month ago. Fortunately this sizer sized all the cases to fit in the CZ's chamber so I didn't need to buy new brass!!!

I had already done a ladder test at 250Y with the CZ and picked the low node. Last week I did a seating depth test. One depth did 5 shots touching with almost no vertical and about .5" wide sealing the deal. It was a little windy so I was happy. 17.7gr of H4198 with 32vmax at 3675 fps in a 21" barrel. I chose the low node for a couple reasons. #1 - this chamber requires neck turning so I want this brass to last and last and last. #2 - I wanted more challenge in the wind.

Some friends and I went shooting steel recently. Long story short it seems this project worked out great! The low .210BC at 3675 fps does provide the extra amount of wind drift I was looking for to begin with, YAY, and the rifle is very accurate! At 310Y there was 1" of vertical!

Backing up a bit. The M700 BR rifle with 25" heavy varmint barrel was also very accurate with no load work up, it went 3740 fps. I just swagged a load at 18 grains with 32vmax and didn't change it. At 17lbs it was wonderfully light recoiling! An annoying problem that popped up was I had to push the short cartridge into the chamber with my pinky finger, doing that was a pain. I decided I didn't need two 5mmFBI's anyway. Long story short I won a free barrel at a match so that rifle now has a 28" 7 twist 223AI barrel on it, thanks Benchmark!

So far a 88 grain ELDM/.545BC, at 2850 fps has been very fun to shoot on steel at longer distances! We were pounding a 15" plate at 981Y easily. This M700 gained a pound with the barrel change, the recoil isn't much more than 5mmFBI was and it's very easy to self spot with.

A few weeks ago I shot coyote at 190Y with the CZ, it was a bang flop!

It was a fun journey but I'm glad it's about finished. I still need to get the 223AI throated out farther and final load work done with it.

Sorry to find this out.

By that statement I'm assuming he passed on, if so my condolences to his friends here on Saubier.

He seemed like a great guy!
