In a short answer "Yes" I have shot mule deer and pigs with the 17/223. Place that pill in the skull/brain and base of neck, they never move. Bill K

I guess I am just old enough to remember growing up when many game animals were taken (and still are in areas) with old 22lr. Heck, even the eskimo's still take lots of game with a 222 remington, and some of it is big game. A person just has to put the bullet in the right spot and not shoot at long distance.. Which is overdone, in my opinion, with the TV shows, etc. now days. Like it or not, small calibers take game, when the shooter is a decent hunter. Bill K

Can small calibers take big game? Of course they can. However, it begs the question of should it be done.

I shot a deer with a 22 short HP in self-defense (he charged me!) when I was 16 years old! Complete surprise to both of us as I walked over a rifle range hill at Camp Robinson! His only get-a-way was thru me and had his head and antlers down to help me out of the way! I shot from the hip in reflex and hit him right in the top of the skull...dropped like a bag of cement from the tailgate of a pick up!
At least that's how I remember it! The deer may remember it differently!

I think small calibers kill plenty of big game every year by people who aern't in it for any kind of 'stunt' or 'proving that it can be done' value. The same type of people who don't ever go on the internet to 'talk hunting' or be an 'online expert'. Inuit people, trappers, natives, meat hunters, cash strapped dudes trying to feed the kids.... kill game with what they have on hand. It can be done and done well. When this topic ends up on a forum it never ends well. Look at that 'accurate reloading'. I hope this place never changes.
