Default Ruger 17 WSM

Well,

I told you guys I'd end up with one.

It will complement my MGM Contender Carbine nicely, in the hottest rimfire round ever made.

After looking for several years and being disappointed with the 'wood grain' or lack thereof on most of these 77/17 WSM rifles; I found my "holy grail"...........new in box.

Intalled a BIC spring in the trigger, no other mods, now trigger breaks cleanly at 3lbs. I will shoot it a while and then might take off some sear engagement to get around 2.25lbs that I prefer. It feels nice now though, with the factory spring it was crisp but heavy at 5.5lbs.

No better way to break it in right?

After shooting 50 rounds at the range, groups were MOA or slightly under for 5 shot groups with American Eagle 20gr.

Bolt lockup feels right tight, don't think i'll be able to shim it any. Didn't try. Nice round groups, so I think were good. Once I get a few hundred rounds through it, I'll see what my best groups will be. Were still breaking in here.

Plenty accurate enough for my needs in my FAVORITE rimfire rifle config.

I'm stoked...............

I have on order some 15gr Lead Free 3,300 FPS rounds coming from Midway early this week. I'll go out and directly test these new ones against the 20gr V max. Report back on that coming soon.

Scope is a New Re-designed Weaver Grand Slam 5-20x50mm Varmint EBX reticle................my favorite scope. I have many, incredible glass, and very useful reticle!!

Beautiful wood on that rifle - at what range were those rats shot, pls?

The damage is about what I expected for 200yards.

Most around 100 yards actually.
I was a bit surprised by the lack of damage myself.

These were young diggers too.

Here is another shot showing a little better what the damage is "normally like"

Range around 75 yards

I did take my .17 Hornet out the other day in the same area and shooting 20gr Nosler Varm reloads, it created noticeably more damage than a .17 WSM will.

I'll have to eat a little crow with some of my earlier statements about the .17 WSM replacing the .17 hornet out to 200 yards. I still think it can and does for me, however, the damage difference is notable.

I still stand by my claims that the .17 WSM typically creates much more damage than a .17 HMR, albiet, just a much better round in general......in my opinion.

I prefer the 22 hornet/22K hornet to the .17 hornet...........
I also prefer the .17 WSM to either the .17 hornet or the .17 HMR for my uses..........

I guess that's why I'm selling my .17 HMR setup/ammo along with the .17 Hornet.

They just don't see any use anymore for me and my applications. 200 yards is a "long shot" in most of my areas. The .17 WSM is a real peach out to that range.

Am happy for you. Sounds like a dandy
hope the cost of entry wasn't too shocking.

George, the cost of entry was more than I was hoping to pay.

But, couldn't help it...........auction site madness.

I did pay around $150-$200 premium, but hey............I'm happy, and the only other stock on a Ruger 17 WSM that comes close to this one (that i've seen), is one that Eric over at "Varminter.com" has.

Yes sir, I've just sold all my .17 hornet ammo, barreled action in .17 hornet, and all my .17 HMR ammo.

I'm keeping my CZ 17 Remington.

But, yes Bill...............I've decided that the .17 HMR doesn't float my boat...........I prefer the .22 magnum over it.

I haven't decided weather I'm going to sell my custom .17 HMR (Ruger 77/17 with Volquartsen bull barrel) all together, or just take the barrel off and sell it............replace it with a custom .22 WMR barrel?? Not sure yet.

For my uses, the .17 hornet wasn't needed/wanted. My 22K's and Standard 22 hornet was preferred over the .17 hornet for many reasons.

And, this .17 WSM and my MGM Custom Barrel contender .17 WSM will fill all my ".17 Rimfire needs".

I decided to "purge" my .17's that weren't getting used much. After much comparison and consideration.

Hey, at least now, I can buy more .17 WSM ammo!!
