Thanks for the responses. I wonder why I didn't get email notification?

I currently cast for 40 S&W and 45-70. Both are pretty easy to cast, no gas checks on either and I don't try and hot-rod them down the barrel. Both are accurate.

Mostly I was looking for cautionary advice about what to do and what not to do when casting 22 cal bullets. I figure if anyone knows the in's and out's of small caliber stuff it will be on this board. I am looking at the NOE molds. They have some nice products.

Both my Fireball and 223 bolt guns shoot the 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets exceedingly well. I intend to stay in that weight range and really like the idea of being self-sufficient in the event sources dry up.

This last week I've filled a 2gal bucket with 175s for the .40, half full of 45s 330 gr, have half bucket to top off for 38's and 250s for 45s. Just brought in another 230 ingots, only cast about 300 for the 45 s330 last night. This has been my late fall hobby for around 25 yrs, once it gets cold I get started loading the empty brass that's collected. Some winters I cast and load 20,000 or more. So the only thing new to me is the caliber.
Never had much luck casting for rifles, but, haven't tried since the late 1950's. Tried to push those too fast with pure lead from the sinker pile. Didn't work. Like I said, some of us have been doing this game for quite awhile.

The Cast Boolit forum is another excellent source of information for loading and shooting cast boolits.

A few years back, many guys on this forum bought 20 caliber molds.

They have to be around somewhere.

Wild Bill is the only guy who made many bullets as I recall. Kenny

If anyone has one of these molds that they are willing to part with I am interested.

I'll consider getting rid of mine, want to talk to my son first about it. I made over 3k of those 30 grain bullets and they are going slow. Last year we was going to try the lead bullets on raccoon but never got around to it.

Since a lead bullet would be heavier for its length than a jacketed bullet, does anyone know how heavy you could go with a 1-9 twist 243?

Swede cuts great molds. Really like his clone of the RCBS 224-55g
Don't overlook the 22 Lee Bator mold, especially if you have a Hornet with a long throat.

I like to cast my 22 bullets out of linotype or Lyman #2 alloy. Not because I push them that fast, but these alloys seem to fill the small diameter molds better.
