Fixed power scopes
I am a fan of fixed power scopes. I do a lot of prairie dog shooting, and my experience is that as a general rule any power over 12X is not reliable under actual prairie dog shooting conditions. Mirage wipes out higher power as heat builds up during the day. I tend to like 10X. If, I have to chose a variable power scope I think that the 4.5 to 14X is probably the best compromise. But still prefer the fixed power scopes. I like Lyman All American scopes the best. I don't expect to see any fixed power scopes produced as the variables offer so much potential value to the consumer in flexibility. I still prefer the precision and reliability of the fixed powers.

I love my 6.5x20 Zeiss scopes. I tend to leave them on 20 most of the time but if mirage becomes a problem it just a twist of the knob. A 200+ yard shot while on 20 power gives you a great look at the action on the other end. I don't know what brand of variable scopes you have used but all of the ones that I have or had (Leupold, Zeiss and Swaro) were all very reliable and user friendly.

Nothing easy about this shooting business, every piece of equipment has its place. I like the fixed powers and have several Leupolds, Burris, and a few others (Unertle). But, there are times I prefer my variables like the Leupold VX111 1.75-6 on my Rock River Predator Pursuit. Or the first focal plane variables for long range. I know a one mile dog is on the agenda for several guys this year.

BB, Sightron makes a fixed 10X42 with a 30mm tube if you're looking.

Every variable scope becomes a fixed power when you stop turning the adjustment ring.

I had a fixed "pre 04' scope. It was good to 200yds for seeing 22 cal bullet holes, but have since aged, and went to a Leu. 6.5-20x40 3mm tube VH reticle scope for the 600yd shots on the 22BR, 221 fireball. Now the Leu. 7-42 is a gem for anything.... I have it on my Dasher.
