Round the block!
I know this has been round the block in other guises, but, if you were limited to only one rifle, would you opt for a repeater, or, a single shot? Caliber? None specific.
I appreciate the members here represent only a small number of shooters in total, so, maybe arms manufacturers can ignore the results of this thread. Ken. Ps. I've been shooting for 58 years, but only started to reload in 2009 when I joined Ruger 204 forum and soon after (Rio) saubier. I would be happy with a single shot as an only rifle. Some day soon I hope to change my deer rifle for for a Merkel single shot, if wifey will sanction it.

As strange as it may be, I would keep my Savage 24V, 30-30 over 20 gauge.

I know that this doesn't answer your question, but in my case, I think that the choice would probably come down to what type of varmint hunting would be expected to accomplish with this rifle. If one expects to hunt Chupacabra, that might require something different in a rifle than if one was going after groundhogs

If its varmints only the 20-222. If big game is the focus 260. Repeater.

I am going to cover both bases! I will keep my 40X 220 Swift. With the proper bullet I have my big game needs covered and we all know what a Swift does to vermin.

One gun it would be my Merkel Drilling. 12x12 over 7x57R with a Kreighoff 22 Mag insert for one of the 12 gauge barrels. It has pop up sights for the rifle and 22 as well as a quick detach claw mounted 6 power Leica scope. The rifle barrel will hold under 1.5" at 200 yards and the 22 mag insert will easily do 1/2" at 50 yards. Pretty well covers anything you would ever want to hunt.

Question was, single shot or repeater. Not make or caliber.
Thanks, Ken.

Okay, well in those terms, my choice fully configured would be a single shot rifle, single shot shotgun and single shot 22 Mag, but since they can be fired in any sequence I guess that would make it a single shot repeater. Plus, it was your original post that mentioned Merkel single shot, so why is make Germaine to your choice and not applicable to mine? That and you specifically asked "Caliber"?
