Very interesting that the case volume makes enough difference to make the 223 subsonic. I have tried it with a 50 grain SPSX in the 221 Fireball, max capacity 6.3 grains, and got:
Trail Boss 4 grains 1225 fps, 11 SD, 4.5 grains, 1400 fps, 19 SD, 5 grains, 1507 fps, 16 SD, 5.5 grains, 1650 fps, 40 SD

None of those are subsonic but they are very quiet shooting loads.

I would be happy with 1225 fps in the .17 Hornet, but talking quiet, how quiet is quiet, lol

The rws 48. 22 works great around the farm, but it would be fun to reduce the .17 HH for under 75 yards on Squirrels/woodchucks.

After all it was either the Airforce Condor .25 or the CZ527. I figured the CZ would be more practical in the long run.

It is actually a lot easier to make larger bore, heavier bullet subsonic loads. The CCI 22 long RF caps are REAL quiet. If you load a 22 Hornet or FB case with a 50 grain SPSX and Trailboss you can get under 1100 fps. If you do this with a 110 grain bullet in a 308 case, or like the 300 Whisper, a 30 cal, 200 grain bullet in a 221 case it is dead simple to get them sub sonic.

If I really wanted to make a 17 H subsonic I would use a 30 grain berger if it will stabilise in your gun or the 25 Vmax, and start at 3 grains of Trail Boss and work down till I got below 1050 FPS, with good accuracy. At 900 FPS out of a 24" barrel it will sound like a CCI cap 22 RF. That would do the job to 75 yards no problem. Let us know how you make out.

FF'ing with 3.6gr. TB and 25gr.HP - 1/4" to 3/8" sized 5-shot groups at 50 yard hitting right on the thick 'plex' in that scope's reticle - velocity 1,785fps. That was a full 100% capacity in necked-only cases, ready for fire forming. Most formed perfectly, the the odd one still had rounded shoulders - too low pressure for 100% forming.

Reducing the load to 70% would of course, not fill out the cases properly - likely a good guess, but would probably shoot OK along with further reduced velocities.

If all the brass a guy had was already formed, a 70% load might give in the vicinity of 1,400 to 1,500fps - just a guess, with probably no more noise than a HV .22 Short.

1.5 gr of trail boss behind a berger 25 gr HP is subsonic in a CZ527 American and it does leave the barrel but I didn't have the chrono set up. By sound it was similar to standard velocity 22lr. Quickload actually calculated 1178 fps

I did use a little fiberglass insulation as filler

Just writing up yesterday's range trip... the other end of Trailboss loads from 3.6g to 4.0gr behind 20gr Nosler SHOTS



There's a nice accurate node at 3.8gr in my rifle, these are much quieter than the standard 17 Hornet round... sounded more like High Velocity 22 LR.
No unburnt granules, but plenty of black soot to clean out

3.6gr. TB - 25gr. Hornady HP - 1,785fps fireforming - and probably as is normal for this barrel, drop 34fps for the same load in formed brass.

7.5gr TB 45gr Hornady hornet in 223 estimate 2000fps by trajectory and JBM, nice quiet load for rabbits + accurate. 85% case capacity, I don't like much empty volume in the case.
