Update...

I ordered a 221 FB SPRING direct from Remington. They sent the WRONG one. Would not work.

Here's a pic. L-R 17 FB spring, the one they sent, my 223 size spring. I'm thinking either the wrong spring was packaged in the bag, or Rem's got their head up their wazoo....OR BOTH.

BUT....I did find the key to making it feed, and eliminated my follower need.

I took a 223 length follower, cut the FRONT off so it's the same overall length of the 17 follower, de-burred and rounded the edges so it doesn't hang up in the mag box. 223 cut down left, factory FB right both pics.

I took my spring out of the 17FB 700 and put it in the 20VT M7 with the cut off follower. In the pic, you'll notice a little 1" long tab. THAT, along with the smaller (shorter foot) spring, is the whole key to feeding. It changes the geometry just enough to prevent the follower from tipping down in front. I had to remove the longer flat piece out of the M7 bottom metal, slide in the 17FB spring, then the 1" long flat tab. Feeds like butter now.

(Continued)

So now, I still have one rifle that won't feed. You can see the 20 VT on right, how much closer to the hinge on the floorplate the end of the spring is compared to the 17FB now with the 223 sized spring and factory FB follower.

So, I cut off 1/4" off the flats of both ends of the 223 sized spring to make the top part fit the 17FB follower length, and the bottom, allowing it to slide closer to the hinge.

Loaded 4 in the mag and cycled perfectly.

Charlie, what was the length that you cut the 223 follower to? I don't have a 221 or 17 fireball follower to go by to cut a 223 follower down. Also, do you have a part number for the fireball mag box spacer from brownell's or remington? I am trying to get my 20VT running as a repeater and think I need to make the modifications you have done...can't find fireball magazine parts at all. Thanks

Gene

Default PTG 221FB Follower

I call PTG a while back and asked if their REM S/A 221 Fireball Follower was for a repeater and was told "no" it was a single shot follower. It wasn't satisfied with the answer so I took a gamble and spent the $13.99 for the 221FB follower. I is defiantly a repeater follower as I guessed. It is anodized red in color and is set up for the magazine spring.

Default 20 VT feedoing from R 700 action

About a month ago I received a custom gun that I had Jim Kobe make.
Original action was a Rem 700 LVSF in 221 fb
Had that action put in a Mcmallan hunter stock with a Kreiger barrel chambered in 20 VT.
It feeds perfectly from the magazine and shoots sub 1/2" five shot groups with 35 gr Berger's.
