Default Bullet of Choice

Been doing this Reloading now for 50 + years and it seems the older I get the less I know.
I have always believed that if Sierra bullets won't shoot there is a issue.

Like some input to see what the general consensus is on Bullet manufacture here is how and why IMHO I rate these

1. Sierra -not really fussy about Seating depth and minimal copper fouling
never seen a .243 that did not shoot the 70 Gr HPBT good
2. Hornady- likes seated near rifleling V-Max shoot on par with Sierra Good
for Deer Size Animals SX in 22 Kill as good as the Plastic Tips

4. Nosler fussy about seating depth Copper Fouls worse of all BT shoot fair

5. Speer only ever had luck with the "Old" Gold Match in 22-Grand Slams are
par with Partitions for accuracy and penatration.

I have used the other brands sparingly had decent luck with the Varmint Grenades

Thanx,
Jim .

I've always found Sierra bullets to be good performers in all caliber choices with the exception that I've never shot any Sierra 20 caliber bullets. In fact I've shot very few factory 20 caliber bullets since about 2000 as I like my own home brewed 20 caliber bullets far more.

This is probably off topic, but the Sierra 6.5MM and 7 MM bullets are solid choices for me for hunting purposes in the 264 Win Mag and the 6.5/284 cartridges, and in the 7MM Rem Mag and even the bigger ones (.338 250 gr. SBT) in 338 Win Mag.

Sierra bullets have very good weight balanced bullet designs from base to tip which improves their flight. In all of my years, I've never found a 22 caliber cartridge from fairly small (221FB/222 Rem) to larger (22-250/220 Swift) which doesn't shoot the Sierra 52 grain BTHP bullet extremely well, and they work extremely well for me as a coyote bullet even though they are supposedly a target only bullet.

I prefer Sierra's these days.
Had a 180gr C/L blow up on an elk at 200yds
so I went to Sierra's 200gr GK's. As luck gets in the
way I haven't had a shot yet.

Have 1000 loaded for the VT but, have only fired about 20
thru the chrono so far.

I'd bet you'll really like 'em.

99 % of all the game I have shot, has been with either Sierra or Nosler's, over the years. Have not had a problem with lost game in over 60 years. A decent bullet, in a decent weight, for what you are shooting, and good shot placement will get the job done. I believe most of the companies make a good bullet, but I have favored the two mentioned, for a long time. Bill K

I started using Hornady 154 gr. 7mm bullets in 1963 and continued using them in various calibers until I quit hunting deer in 1980. In all that time, I only had one deer that I lost and that was bad shooting. The Hornady soft points never failed me. My sons and I took over 100+ bucks, so that is a pretty good loss ratio.

As for the 243, the 70 gr bthp sierras are so accurate with the 75 bthp Hornadys running second. It seems to be a fine line between accurate and super accurate bullets. In most cases, it is over kill and a waste of resources to attain super accuracy, but I am guilty as charged.

Funny thing. When I was 'sorting bullets' in the freshly rebarreled .223 Sako.
The 40gr Noslers only made 1 1/4" groups of five shots. Same wt v'max were one holers: .230" for the first five and again three more times with ten shots all less than .325".

Rem 55's el cheapo's went into just about 5/8". That's what I use on p/dogs on the wide open. IF there's livestock or buildings, or any other reason I can't have any richochette's I use the 40 v'max's.

I was very surprised the Noslers didn't do better than that. Those are the only one's I've tried.

Nosler 40gr. BT's were very accurate in my .218bee at 3,600fps and up. They matched or exceeded the Vmax- however best were the 40gr. HP by Barnes - the VLC's (blue) or straight guilding metal.
