Funny how Sako and Norma seems like they are made on the same machine.

Yep, they are almost identical... Norma has slightly smaller flash holes.

Dont know about 17H brass but 22Hornet has a rim thickness spec of 0.065"+o.oo7" so you could have a rim recess of 0.072" most of the 22Hornet brass i measured RWS R&P WW Hornady was a lot thiner the thickest was 0.061" most were 0.060" a couple were 0.059" so my thickest rim could have had 0.011" play and my thinest could have had 0.013" play is it any wonder that hornet brass has seperation issues.
On my Ruger77/22H based 17A/H with the stupid two piece bolt i have reduced the rim recess to 0.060" and shimmed the bolt centre to compensate.

Default headspace off shoulder

My practice is size to just touching shoulder. Headspace on rim is set to max to accommodate thick rims so if headspaced to shoulder a thinner rim will be touching bolt face and shoulder, thus making headspace much more even and the same as any other non rimmed case. sgtg out

A thought (more like a brainfart!) regarding headspace and case stretching.

Many moons ago i was into black powder big time and i had a Mauser 1884 rifle.
The original case has what is known as the Mauser A bottom with is thick! I had to fireform 100 pcs of 348Win so i could start shooting.
I thought long and hard over the headspace issue and came up with this: Use an O-ring in front of the rim. If it is of proper dimensions it will hold the case back against the boltface while the firing pin sets the party of.
Long story short, it worked a treat and when i get my CZ 527 17 Hornet Varmint at the end of the month i have an ebay bag of 500 O-rings lying for just that function.

My hope is zero case stretching from get go and keep it that way.

Default Best .17 H brass

That is a new one on me. If you headspace on the shoulder and to the bolt face or action face, why the o-ring ? You should have no head space problem if brass is fired in chamber butted to base to shoulder contact. Bill K

The firing pin pushes the case forward as far as the rim will allow.
Now the case expands and grips the chamber.
Last the case stretches as far backwards as the bolt will allow.

Hey presto a stretched case.

If i use the O-ring to hold the case against the boltface the shoulder will form in the correct palce from git go and i wont have a stretched case at all.

Is this double dutch?

All I have done, too get the same effect is load the bullet out to touch the lands and hold the case against the boltface, then when the round is fired it forms the shoulder/case to the chamber. After that I just neck size the case and it fits the chamber just right. But what ever works, go for it. Bill K
