We've built several 20's using 12tw, 11, 10, 9, and 8.
20 Dashers, 20-250's, 20 tacs, and 20 VTs.
Currently shooting a 20-250 with 9tw and 55's, a 20 Tac 12 tw with 32s and 40s. Also 2 20 VTs with 8 tw and 32's.
All workin great, but the 20 VTs are and absolute ball with the 8tw and 32s. Accurate, deadly, and much spat factor with the super spin on the small projectiles.

And they are still holding up out in the 400 yrd range, with the 1/8 twist and 32 grain, with good accuracy ?

Dasherr,

I’d like to know more about the 8 twist 20 VT and the 32s.

Are the 32s vmaxes?
How is the accuracy compared to the 10, 11, and 12 twist?
Barrel length and velocity?
High elevation?

Really curious about this!

Thanks,

If you use a suppressor you might want to stay away from an 8 twist as your bullets ( 32gr @ 3800-3900 )may start to come apart in the can. I have 3 20VT all 12 twist and all will shoot 40 gr Vmax just fine but a 11 twist would be great. In my opinion the 55's are more for 20-250 and other big cases

Good point. I will be using a suppressor. I’m leaning towards 11 twist and just shooting bullets in the 32-40 grain window.

I thing you gotta realize is throat wear on a barrel when you spin bullets really fast. I know 55's will get tore up on 8 twist barrels with alot of throat wear in fast 20's.
You probably would have the same scenario with a 20VT with an 8 and 32's

As usual Sherm is on the money in his observations about the 20's in regards to throat erosion. A couple of years ago I did a 20/250 with a 10-twist Krieger trying to slow down the bullet rpm, and hopefully keep from tearing up the Berger 55 gr 20 cal bullet. I guess one could say it partially worked out...Lol! I just pulled the barrel recently and cut 4" off the chamber end. It was a HV and I managed to still have a breech end of 1.200". Left me a 22" bbl that I turned into an extra 20 Mink bbl. The point is the barrel only had (417) rds through it!! The throat erosion and fire cracking was really bad. I put a new Bartlein HV bbl on that action and chambered it for 20 BR with a 1:9 twist. "If" you use a single point cut rifled barrel for your 20 VT project you might get by with a 9-twist and the 55 gr Berger?? The best thing like others have said is to stay with an 11-twist and the 32/40 gr bullets for the 20VT. That's what TK originally designed the cartridge for with those bullet weights. Good luck in your decision. 410gauge

I have an 11 and 10, and both work well with 40 Vmax.

Both my Vartargs are super accurate. both wear Mullerworks 8 tw barrels. I notice no difference in accurracy between them and my 12tw PacNor on my 20tac. The TAC does does have some wind advantage of course.

I do aggree on the mentioned twist rate if your looking at throat life. Building rifles is my business so I'm less concerned about that than someone looking for long throat life. These rifles are set up to cut back and rechamber if/when needed. We shoot lots of squirels. Also shoot suppressed with no problems so far. I did the 8tws for Fast RPMs. Seems to splat extra well with the 32 gr. Vmax. The fire coming out of a Vartarg is minimal, so we're hoping for good throat life, but not a big concern to me. I can also shoot my 50 and 55 gr. Bergers with them, so thats a plus.

My 20-250 is a 9 tw. made for coyote hunting and maybe a few chucks. I keep the heat at a minimum so this rifle could last me a long time. If I were building one Vartarg I would definitely consider the 11 tw.

Good luck on your new build!

Can't think of a funner cartridge to shoot! Maybe my 17 FB or 19 Badger.
