Default 20 Tactical Shell Holder ?

HI,
I am loading for a 20 Tactical (Dakota Brass) and have run into a small problem. I usually prime with a Lee hand primer. When I use the shell holder #4 for .223, the brass is VERY hard to slide in. I can't find another one that will work. Does anyone use this to prime Dakota brass? If so how do you overcome this?

I don't have this problem when putting the Dakota brass in loading press. I use a Lyman shell holder here. Don't have priming system for press.

I also have a RCBS hand priming tool which uses standard shell holders. The problem here is the Lyman shell holder will not fit RCBS hand primer. This is because the RCBS shell holders have a tapered hole in the back and the Lyman is flat. Do any other shell holders have this taper making them fit RCBS hand primer?

Is my only option to buy a RCBS shell holder?

Thanks
Doug

Default 20 Tac shell holder

I do not use the hand primer, but my #10 RCBS shell holder in either of the bench press's I have works with all the 223 size brass, even the Lapua I have. Bill K

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I figure I am going to have to buy a RCBS shell holder. Don't know why the Lee won't work. It works great with 223 brass but not the Dakota. Posted a WTB ad in a couple of places. If no response in a few days I will order from Midway. Thought I had some loaded to play with my new toy, but all were empty. I have the brake installed and hopefully will get to try it this week. I have a 22 inch OTT in 20 Tac. Going to compare side by side. Will let you know when I get around to it. Life always seems to side track my plans, but I will eventually get around to it.

Safe shooting
Doug

Default 20 Tac shell holder

I use a #4 Lee shell holder for my Sinclair priming tool for my Dakota brass, and it works just fine. Call Lee and they will gladly replace it with one that will work. You just have a tight one.

The "problem" is that the notch in your brass is not cut deep enough.
It happens and S&B is notorious for it.
25-30 seconds with a Dremel and you're done.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions.

Was also told on another forum that standard press shell holders can be used if bottom is ground off.

I did try to grind the #4 I have and it appears to be binding on the outside of rim. I tried some Win 223 and it fit perfect, but when I tried some military 223 I got the same result as with the Dakota Brass.

I have a New #4 headed my way now. Lee also replied if I would send them some of my cases they would try to find one for me that fits. Going to give the one I ordered a shot before sending Lee some cases.

Thanks again
Doug

The grinding/cutting trick only works if it is a Lee shell holder.
The hole fits the "stem" in the Lee hand primer but Hornady shell holders has a much larger hole and would rattle in the primer tool.

Hi,
Got a new RCBS shell holder (thanks to Straght8) and just got a new Lee #4. Problem solved. Can now prime with RCBS and Lee hand primer. All cases fit BOTH!!
Thanks for all the input.
