I needed sight bases for the Ruger 22 Rush and since I used a #1 barrel contour the only available option was custom bases. These will be for Talley rings and therefore will be easy to cut and make, well kind of. This is front sight base, the rear is going to have to wait until my new fly cutter arrives.
You start with two block similar in dimensions, from there you have to mill the radius to or close to the barrel contour, in this case I was about .030" too small with a .750" mill bit. This requires the blocks to be fit to the barrel in a central location. I use a small jelly jar filled with kerosene to blacken the part. The parts is then rubbed against the location where it's to be fitted. Once a decent amount of contact is made the black is then trued up, I used the mill to rough it out and the surface grinder to finish it. .030" of metal takes some patience to remove when it's a delicate operation. Various stones and hones are needed, I use a Diprofiler, an outdated machine to the industry but for operations like this it's perfect. Once I get rings in I will cut the dovetails to spec and fit. These rings will be screwed on but I am not ruling out the possibility of soldering them on... Adam Last edited by ab_bentley; 07-25-2014 at 02:13 AM. |

How are the sight blocks going to be mounted/secured on the barrel?
