221 Fireball and Lil'Gun Results
My Hornets just plain don't like this powder, but with powder on hand I decided to give it a try in my CZ 527 American in 221 Fireball. As I worked up to the listed Hodgdon listed maximum of 16.0 gr. with a 40 grain bullet, the accuracy started getting better and better, and the 15.5 and 16.0 gr. loads delivered 1/2 MOA accuracy. I went home and loaded up more ammo for a return trip to the range, this time with my chronograph. The accuracy was for real and the 40 gr. bullets were clipping across the screens at 3616 fps! A stunning 300 fps faster than the Hodgdon load data.
Anyone else tried Lil'Gun in their 221 Fireball? |

those of us that have used lilgun have known that for years, a well kept secret.

It works fine, but watch your loads, if worked up in cool weather and used in hot weather (temps) it can suddenly give some real high pressure jumps.

Will do. If 15.75 gr. shoots as well as the 16.0, the simulated peak pressure is only 43k, so that should give me some pressure margin on a hot day.

I stuck with 15.6 with a 40gr Berger. No need to chance it with temp instability or loader error.

What brand of brass? I only ask, because I was told the Nosler .17 FB brass held 2 grains less than the Remington.

I shot a ton of Lil'Gun in my 221s. All very close to 16 grains with 40 grain Vmax. Never saw a pressure problem, great accuracy and way more speed than any other load I tried. If you down load that powder you can see wonky pressures, but load it at book min or above and I have never had a problem. Used it in the 221, 22H and 17H, thousands apon thousands of rounds shooting gophers.

I use Lil Gun in my 22 Hornets, 221 Fireball and 25-20 Winchester. It works very well, see no reason to change.
