So you've never hunted the 'Wet Phone Book' fields in the Dakotas? Lots of fun but, hard on barrels!!!

HA! That's funny!!!
my little testing the 20xtp on raccoons left me thinking that they was still lacking energy to make good clean kills on a raging raccoon. Recovered most but some ran good and required a second shot. The 5 mm mag and 22 mag had better results. Of course a single shot to the head in a tree top was DRT even with a 17/17 from the Lil hm2.
I've done that phone book thing but like said before its been some time nice I've had any around.

I know the 17's get lots of good press, but it is really hard to beat a good old .22 Mag on a Coyote if you have to use a Rim Fire. Raccoons are tough little guys, and a .22 Mag will put them down better than any of the RF 17's I have seen. But, we are all about the small bore things here, so I guess I would vote for the 5mm rf. I debated 17HMR versus the 22Mag when I was buying this Volquartsen.
17HMR got my vote because of the higher percentage flatter trajectory.
Follow-up shots, when neccessary, aren't a problem with an accurate semi automatic.
I wouldn't consider a Vmax bullet - even if it was more accurate.
The difference in penetration during testing was so small that I'd consider the 20grain CCI and Winchester equals.
Look forward to accuracy testing the Winchester ammunition.
oh yeah,,,, I don't miss my 17 HORNET

Default 17hmr

The 17HMR beats them all because it so much more accurate! Crows out to 200+yds. for me theres nothing better rim fire or center fire!

Default Alberta AL and the 17hmr VQ

I had a VQ in 17hmr. Using It with Hornady 17 gr V-Max rounds resulted in bulged bases (rimmed area) and one split neck and blown shoulder. Never shot CCI or Winchester in it. A Hornady tech informed me that the lot #s I was using were not the problematic ones. I assume that not using the V-Max is a better way to go with the VQ.

Since I had 4,000 rounds of the 17 gr V-Max I sent the gun to Scott and he refunded my $ based on the 2005 retail price. Wound up getting an Anschutz 17hmr which shoots 5/8" groups (5 shots) @ 100 yds.with the V-Max. Since I shoot ground squirrels with it, the expansion is welcomed. Only shoot it out to 150 yds with a 2 1/2" drop at that distance. I use my 17 AH for longer shots.

Is it a 1517 or the heavy barrel? Thinking about getting one. On sale 578 and 850 respectively.
