Default Shaw barrel came today

Sure looks nice, it does need a final polishing yet.
They sent the old take off Enfield barrel Trotter sent them
to use as a pattern. I want to get another one made for
the 300 as it's getting worn so bad the rifling can barely
be seen. All this stuff takes money it seems.

Haven't checked the chambering yet, so don't know if they
cut it deeper as I asked or not yet. everything else checks
out on the money though, so I expect that's done right too.

Total cost was $237. As long as they've been in business I
fully expect it will shoot just fine.

This one is a .243, Don't think it's going to work for my needs.
Damn it! Told them to twist it for a 100-105 gr bullet. Ticket
says: 8" twist, I think that's too fast. How about some feedback
guy?
26",radius crown, 4140 steel, finished chamber, 2.5 taper
threaded for 1917 Enfield. I will have it blued.

Will take it to the gunsmith after the 3rd.

George, believe the 1/8 twist will work fine, but you never know for sure until you do some actual shooting. All else seems to be to your liking, so I hope the twist does work, also. Will be watching for your results and future posts and information on it. Bill K

Thanks Bill.
I told them: "you people know what twists fit our needs much
better than I do. Twist it for the best match with 100-105gr
as that's all I shoot". This is what came.

We'll learn once the gun is finished. I think the 700 I sold to
finance this project was a 12" twist. I'm not positive though.
I'll ask the buyer to measure it. He's been trying to burn the
barrel up at 600-800 yards at a rock. Says he just dials in the range
and starts splattering it.

I only use a 243 for antelope. Tried coyotes but, blew 'em up too bad
to save the hides.

George,
I think (Probably wrongly) that 12 twist wil only stabilize up to 85/90 max.
My 243AI is 12 twist and it suited me as I only used 68/70 grain. I tried 100 grain factory and won't shoot worth a hoot.
Ken.

George I have one with a 10 twist and am having a heck of a time trying to shoot 90-100's. It's a Browning A Bolt and the 58gr shoot nice little groups. But the bigger bullets are all over and think they won't stabilize. I think your 8 may be the ticket for what you want to shoot. Let me know what happens I am very curious to know.

An 8" twist will shoot anything from 55gr up to 115gr VLD's. Anything slower and the longer 100+ gr bullets could suffer.

Default 105's...?

Reading the OP I think when you said 105's that told them you were going to shoot the VLD's that are offered in that weight. Plenty of 100gr hunting bullets for the 243, I've not seen 105 Hunting bullets, not that they can't be used for it. All the 105's and even my favorite the Sierra 107MK will be better served with a 1-8"tw. My favorite long range 6mm is a 6x47Lapua with a Krieger 1-8" shooting the 107MK. I've put a lot of wood on the wall with that rifle.

Have one of those evil black rifles with a 20" 1/8 twist 6x45mm barrel on it. Even at 2500 fps, the 105 Hornady AMax bullets shoot just fine.

I'll be back out to Pueblo late July in 2018 and hope our paths can cross again.

I have a 243 Win Varmint with a 10 twist. I will shoot the 90 gr VLDs fine and all hunting 100gr and the Speer 105 gr Semi point, but that 8 twist will shoot them better. If I ever re-barrel it, I would get a 8 twist.

Default They did good by you George.

SOME say they stabilize in a 9 but enough say not quite. The 8 is the go to for the 105 range. As for the 115s, I have a 7.5 for them as I've read on multiple posts that more tw needed. Hope it is sufficient, wish it was a 7.
If you think you may want to try the new Tubb 115 .620BC DTACs or the Bergers in the teen range, mebbe go with mfrs' recommendation and go sub 8tw. Iirc Berger sez 7. All mileages may vary.
