Default 257 cal. Choice?

Given a choice between an 87 grain flat base soft point at 3030 fps and a 90 grain boat tail hollow point at 2920 fps, which bullet would you choose for deer hunting, assuming both are suitable for deer?
Thanks, Ken.
Ps. Range would be 200 yards maximum.

If that 90g is the Sierra GameKing, It is a great bullet for deer. I take it you have slower twist barrel? If you can handle a longer (heavier) bullet, The 117g GK is good too. You should also be able to handle the 100g SPT GK it is just a tad longer than the 90g.

Speer 100g BT SP is a good (cheap) bullet that works well.

For overall Deer, I honestly have never see much of a reason to use anything more than the old (but good) 100g CLSP from Remington. They are in short supply right now, but they do a good job.

I assume you are shooting the .257 Bob (Roberts). That little 1/4 bore is a wonderful cross caliber for both medium game and varmints. You have a wonderful array of bullets suitable for both types.

Hi Ron,
No, not a Bob, it's a 25-45 Sharps. Brux barrel in a Rem.700 action.
I need (To be deer legal in England) 1700 ft lbs, and those are the only two bullets weights i can reach it with.
Shot a Fallow deer (Lung) at 183 yards three weeks ago with the 87 Hot-Cor. Fell where it stood and kicked a bit and died, but I couldn't see the entrance hole and the ribs on the far side were smashed in a 2 1/2" diameter circle, but the bullet didn't come through the skin and wasn't found. Would have been no blood trail had it run.
I won't get many shots at deer and was hoping someone had used both bullets and could say 'Use this one, not that one'
The 90 is the GameKing and the 87 is Sierra Hot-Cor.
Thanks for your reply.Ken.

Both are fine choices, if one shoots better than the other pick it. If not, go with the 90g for the next shot and see how you like it, terminal performance is quite similar. I can attest to it running at 2800+/- from my pistol I've taken deer here at 150-175yds cleanly and....had one pop up in front of my blind a whopping 5 paces, she was about 100lbs dressed, took the heart and offside shoulder out, large exit hole no recovery on that one. But it shows that it holds together well enough at high velocity. That was, to be honest, what sold me on the HP GK's.

I've been well satisfied with the Speer hot core as well. No trouble that I can recall with any of them over several calibers.

ken you're probably not going to get exit holes with either of those bullets. if you want an exit hole look at the barnes 80 gr ttsx or nosler of the same design in a 100 grainer.
good shooting

Have shot the 90gr Game King for years out of a 257 Ackley. Pushing them at 3450FPS and they are an absolute death ray on critters (Mule Deer / Antelope / coyotes / etc.)

If you slow them down in your 25-45, they will work great.

I relate it to a 6x45 that I shoot 80gr Sierra Blitz out of. It slows down in that little case and performance on larger game (deer size) improves drastically.

I also shoot that 90Gr GK in a 250AI and it just works.

You will not get many exits with it. Just the way the bullet is designed.

You won't be disappointed.

I know it’s not one of the bullets you asked about, but the 85 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is a far more capable deer bullet than you might suspect...
